How cold is TOO COLD in Russia?

I found these pics from the St Petersburg area interesting. I've been in Russia when it was -17f but never this cold. Minus 67????

I've been in the extreme cold around the -40 mark (not counting wind chill!!) Once was in Fargo, N.D. another time it was -42 in Great Falls Mont. You step outside and your face starts to freeze almost right away! But -55 is ridiculous!!

Thats cold! good thing for to keep you warm

I've had to be in -75f with a 30 mph wind on top of that and it was no fun! I'm not sure what -55c equals though.

-55 c would be about - 67 f. At -40 they are the same, for every 5 deg c colder (or warmer) it = difference of 9 deg f.

I remember talking with a women from Siberia last year, she was in Novosibirsk. She said it was normal for freezing weather every single day!I asked her how do you deal with it. Her answer was "I have to" what choice do I have?

There are definitely places in Siberia where -60oC occurs once or twice a year.... here in Ufa, it'll hit -30 or so for a few days. Cold enough for me thanks

Hey, I'm a central California boy. We have a Mediterranean climate that rarely gets below freezing. -40 or -50 I have no concept or reference. I just know people are comfortable and acclimated to whatever they grow up with.

Royalpalace774, I can understand your woman saying "I have to, what choice do I have?" It is the same as I observed of Russian people in Ulyanovsk dealing with the potholes in the roads or no hot water. It's just "this is the way it is, it's normal."

They are either very tolerant people, or simply resigned to the circumstances they are dealt, or both.

Thanks for the conversion Freebird.
I was at Prudhoe Bay Ak just east of Point Barrow up in the oil field.I NEVER want to be that cold again. Another guy got frost bit with just 5 minutes outside. His skin froze on his cheeks and nose. It's very painful when it thaws and during the healing..
Very similar pain to a bad burn. But you don't know it when it happens.

Yup, I saw -30 -> -35C whilst in Tyumen. It was so funny, one breath in through your nose and you could feel your nose hairs freezing...

Quite refreshing actually

As long as you did not have to walk too far to the taxi that would deliver you to a warm destination....

I remember the winter in Russia that was about two years ago. It was - 40 - 45C.

I'm survived

Around here -35 C or -40 C is TOO COLD. A year and a half ago we had -46, now that was what you call COLD!!! I even created a thread on this forum called "Siberian hell" or smth like that)).

But if you're in Moscow, you can get the same freezing feeling with only -20 outside. Thats becuz of different humidity, which means a whole lot too.

-55 C ( on that picture) - nothing unusual in that. Eastern Siberia lives with -60 C in winters. Low humidity saves them. Not sure about St.Petes though, for that area -55 would be lethal.

Here in Southern Manitoba we get a couple of cold snaps about a week or two long with below -30C. When the wind starts howling it can reach a windchill of -50C.

They close schools for that kind of temps, and many construction crews go home also. Then its time to party
