Anyone Recall Dean Reid-The 'red' Elvis

What with all the chat about the 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, I started thinking about how many of my young Russian friends really liked Dean Reed back in the late 1970s and early 1980's. After that I found this fascinating account of him on this weblog and a link from that to a Russian fans forum which is still going strong. I was amazed, I remember seeing him on Soviet TV when I visited Russia for the first time as very young man in 1982 and I recall he was genuinely popular. The weblog is found at

Does anyone else have any memories of this really quite remarkable personality, I remember a crowd watching one of his concert in a University student common room area and a lot of drinking and dancing afterwards

I remember my husband telling me about Dean Reid and being so disappointed that I, the American, never heard of this big American Star! Of course, in Russia they thought he was a big star in America but most Americans hadnt ever heard of him.
I know him only thru my Russian husband.
