First there is good and bad weight gain. Your body will react differently from anyone else's. Having said that..to gain muscle mass do fewer repititions with as much weight as you can handle. Normally 3 or 4 reps per set, and 2 or 3 sets per muscle group. rest one or two days between exercising muscle groups. I need 3 or 4 days to recover. Creatine or one of those things can help your muscles recover somewhat faster.
More reps = muscle toning
fewer reps = bigger muscles

IT takes time and effort and you have to know what your body can do. Good luck
