I was reading a post by GG2 and he mentioned about the problem of many (young?) people in the U.K. have chosen to live as Lazy "Mindless Drunken Slobs". I have not been back to the U.K. since my teenaged years (20 odd years ago) so I wonder if those of you that live there would agree with that assessment? What has happened to Responsibility/Motivation/Pride?

How modern generation can be responsible or motivated (majority at least) if modern school doesn't teach these things. And it doesn't teach this because it is not allowed by the government in power.

As varya states, how can they learn if :-
a/ it is not taught
b/ if you try to teach it you get sacked
c/ the parents are incapable of understanding themselves

They are now enforcing their cracked ideas on 2-3 year old children; we have had several Early years teachers quit because they cannot face the damage being done to these children in the name of political correctness; the governments own studies have shown that the teaching methods and "inclusion" in schools is causing the radicalisation of minority youths; Muslims, Hindu's etc; yet they will not stop enforcing them.

It's not allowed, it might harm their "Sense of Self Worth"; FFS they don't even know what self worth IS!!!!
Every fortnight, Private Eye magazine has a section on "Birt Speak"; nonsensical language inspired by the ex Governor General of the BBC; they could take practically every word written by OFSTED and the child care profession and print it in there!!!! The Plain English Society would go into melt-down if they got their hands on a copy of the "NVQ Level 3 Child Care" manual.

Complete and utter garbage; and I have to start a Degree course on it in September.

Is the education policy set by the national government? In Canada (and the US I think) each province (state) sets its own standards. But even so, the parents should have primary responsibility for the child's upbringing. How do these layabouts finance their lifstyles anyways? Over here the unemployed are supposed to look for work before they qualify for the dole.

Did you know they are now cancelling sports days because not everyone can win, it is in case some poor cherub feels that he/she is inadequate if they come second or god forbid last

This is a hot topic here too (Georgia, US). What can you teach people? counting, grammar, reading, etc. But we ask schools to teach our children discipline? Morals? Self Motivation? What??? Parents have abdicated their roles and now are blaming schools for their lack of parenting. School just started here and they had a story about the first day of school for many youngsters. Heavens! It isn't like they are going off to war! they are going to school!! And many parents want their kids to have graduation ceremonies for each grade!!! School is not an endless procession of graduation ceremonies!! IF you are a parent, sit down and figure out what you expect out of the school, then sit down and figure out what you need to do to support your child's education. And finally, support the school and the teacher--even if, sometimes especially if they are wrong. Not every time they are wrong obviously but there are times in childrens' lives that they learn when they are wronged. There are lessons everywhere if we will just use them as such.

And on the subject of sports...since when did you have to win, to enjoy playing?????

The government sets the policy ( and changes it every other week), and the Labour Party have long been known for their interfering, Nannyish behaviour; the trouble is that the dimmer members of society LOVE that the Government wants to take control of everything, it means they can let their kids do what the f&$k they like and them blame it all on the state.

It only takes one or two children to disrupt a classroom; if there is no way of controlling them, then the "sheep" will also play up and one you get to 5-6 of them the class becomes uncontrollable and no-body learns anything, even if they want to.

The next problem is that the Government do not seem to WANT intelligent people leaving school, they might question the government over the cr@p it does; so they are cutting out classes in various sciences at High school and brining in "soft" sciences that mean whatever you want them to, I mean, WTF is Media Studies ??? and how does it relate to real life?? Maths is taught entirely with calculators now, History has been emasculated, apparently they are too ashamed to admit we won a few wars.

University's are closing Physics and Chemistry departments because an NVQ in some utterly useless subject is worth 5 times more in qualification credits than a MA in any science or engineering subject AND gets a higher level of funding.

As for being able to afford to sit on their ass, they can leave school and go straight onto the Dole, although at a slightly lower level than an adult and as to seeking work, who wants an employee who needs to be taught to read and write before they are of any use??
Until recently the only way to get a council house was to be foreign or a pregnant teenager, and many of the female losers have been doing just that, getting pregnant in their last year of school to get a house and play at being mummies and daddies with their equally stupid boyfriends ( if they aren't off sh@gging someone else by then).

BTW We had a pickup truck full of teens toking up outside nursery this afternoon, did the fuzz come ? no; they did turn up a few hours later and do a couple of lads for parking their mopeds in a disabled parking bay though!!!

Well I'm happy to report that its not all doom and gloom in the UK , we are fortunate to live in a nice town , with very sociable and caring neighbours who manage to bring up well rounded children. Yes we have the occasional incident here in Hertford, but on the whole we are very lucky!

Just thought I'd post this before you all think the UK is on the brink of collapse!!!!!

This thread started out as the Decline of the British Nation but should probably be renamed the Decline of Western Education as it appears to be a common complaint that education is in the centre of the issue.

Being a High School teacher I see to much $h1t being chucked (figuratively speaking) at teachers when the REAL issue is the lack of control parents have of their own children. If parents keep pandering to the little $h1ts then they will always believe that the rest of society is there merely to keep them in the lifestyle that they are accustomed to. I had a year 9 Science class the other day and had to give them a unit assessment. Standard assessment rules applied like well lets see No Talking, No Copying, No Cheating. 3 times I had to tell a group of children (14 year olds btw) not to talk. At the end after everyone had finished the assessment I told them publicly that they had a lunchtime detention with me (btw I am a complete A$$HOLE, just ask year 9 they'll tell you) the bell goes and I go to my next class. After having playground duty at recess I get back to the science staffroom where the Head Teacher of Science snaps at me "What happened 2nd period" to which I replied I showed year 10 a video about how babies are made (yes I was a SMART A$$ because he snapped at me for no reason) then we have a discussion about a detention given out at 2nd period and I kept having to tell him IT WAS 1ST PERIOD I KNOW I WAS THERE. By this time I am really P1$$ED OFF cause he was being rude to me. Anyway he finally figures out he has made a mistake and it boils down that some little princess thought she would ring mum on her mobile phone (which btw are banned in NSW public schools) and try to get me sacked for giving her a detention when all she did was talk for an hour throughout an assessment task.

The point of all this is the kids will never be responsible if there parents pander to their every desire. One last thing this becomes a generational problem because 1 smart a$$ gives birth to a clone of themselves and they slowly but surely degenerate into a house full of the pond scum they choose to be believing the rest of society owes them something.

Somehow, we have arrived at a time and place where we not only have to teach/train the children but we have to teach/train the parents. Weak principals/administration only adds to this problem.

Couldn't agree more Oz, good post. If the parenst don't see a problem then how are the kids every going to learn, basic morals, decency and manners seems to have been forgotten long ago by many, unfortunately!

I imagine if you were interested in a career in some area of the media - a huge industry - then Media Studies might be a good choice. A qualification in that would be far more useful than one in (dare I suggest) History!

Well his home work in the subject seems to consist of doing google searches and printing out the results; hardly seems like a subject that needs teaching at school; and sampling music; again hardly stuff needed it real life when 1/2 the kids leave school unable to read adequately, or do basic mental arithmetic.
I always said that the "whole word" method of teaching reading was bad, they come across a new word and they don't have a clue how to "read" it, because they have never been taught phonetics.

Hey Chris the saga continued today and from what I can tell princess and her mother are going to get a rude shock very shortly. To cut a very long story short princess lied bigtime and princess mother has made a complete a$$ of herself.

Stevo I agree with you, Media Studies at least in Australia is quite an academic subject, and by the very definition of the name kids must be able to read and write to a decent standard to do it simply because most of the world media is still printed.

GG it seems England needs to get a shock soon to get back into education. If Media Studies is an academically weak subject in England then it should be re-written to give it some academic gusto.

I think you are right Oz Guy, parents abandon their responsibilities these days.

My mother (grade 1 teacher) found if she started to meet out disciplne - had kids tell her "my daddy is a lawyer and he will sue you" Also had the same cr@p start to come in "you can't bad report cards, it will crush their little egos!"

Gentle Giant - now you realize that we (Brits) are a violent nasty race. If we had all just held hands and sang Kumbaya with Hitler, Tojo, Mussolini, Napoleon etc. then the world would be a better place.

I dont know about the schooling there in England but we have a mechanic at the city I work for who is from England.
He moved here because he couldn`t afford to live there he says.
Tha sales taxe is like 18% or something and goes up 1% a year?
If this is true i dont blame him for leaving.
What a load of crap. Ya make the worker pay for all the lazy a$$es.
These types of policys work real well. Punish the producers but sooner or later there will be no producers left. Taxed to death.
DOnt move to the US for schools though , they seem the same all over.
Make them all sheep so they take government ideals better.

Sales tax is 17.5 and hasn't changes in years, Council Tax is the real bummer, mine has gone from �300 15 years ago to �1500;and they don't send you a bill, they send you a "DEMAND", and for that I get fake Police who turn up 4 days after you phone them ( if you are lucky), a refuse collection service that is poor and getting worse, and Council Officials whose excuse for not repairing side roads is " to encourage motorists not to use them" !!!!wtf??!!!!
Petrol. Alcohol and Cigarette, taxes go up by about 5% EVERY year, ciggies and petrol both cost about �5 a pop (Pack of 20/Gallon).
You have to pay a tax to buy a house, you have to pay a tax to sell your house, you have to pay a tax just to pit your house up for sale!!!
And when you die they take 40-60% of what you leave behind as tax!!!!

I wont mention the obscene price hikes for passports and visa's again this year.

No wonder a record number of people emigrated this year.
