Popped in to look around before going to bed, nearly every new posting is Spam!!!!; can I have the egg and chips without the Spam please !!!!.

Posted by: AkMike

Yup, It's getting bad. I wonder if some settings could be re-set to prevent "new members" from posting for a few days to stop this?? A 'puter guru is needed.

Posted by: dagpop

Gentle, eggs and chips coming right up. Here's a martini to wash it down.

Posted by: dagpop

I think you will like this SPAM.

Posted by: freebird

I think it is possible, but it would be a function of vBulletin... the software that runs this forum.

Posted by: AkMike

I'll bet that Khashyar, Searcher or Waiting123 as the Admin's will check into it soon.

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

I don't know about vBulleton but phpBB has the ability to stop all the crap coming through and guess what its free.

Only problem with this is that if you stop from allowing new members from posting right away, then there is a chance that they will leave the site and not come back again. Most 1st posts are questions. If I had to wait two or three days before I could post my 1st question, I would be so inclined not to come back.

Just my opinion.

Since vBulletin is so well known I wonder if there was a way to change it ever so slightly that it will fool the automated robots.

Posted by: Longfellow

My thought is that this kind of behavior is just the cost of 'doing business'.

I agree that to say a new member can't post doesn't serve the purpose of the board. Dealing with spam and inappropriate posts is what mods and admins do...

For those of us who find this a good place, it is hard to understand why some people choose to target it for spamming. Imagine how tiresome it is for those who run the board... starts to feel like all they do is ban and delete.

For those interested, you can learm more about this software, it's features and documentation here.

Another forum I use has one "open" area for unconfirmed new members to post in, the rest you cannot access until they have confirmed your email address ( takes a few minutes, tops); at least that would keep all the cr@p in one place; they also limit postings to one every 30 seconds to stop the script monkeys posting 100's a second.

Back to the Spam, I found a box full of books in a friends attic a few years ago, "101 Spam Recipes" !!! dozens of copies !!!!!! ( I don't eat there any longer).

I was wondering why so many spammers come from Abu Dhabi, then I just thought yesterday its the first country on the list - automatic choice for the 'bots. They should add one more country to choose from right at the top of the list called "A special hell just for spammers" then block it from posting for 2 days or something

Posted by: Chrismc

Yes freebird that is why they are all listed as Abu Dhabi, but your cunning little plan may just work

That's a really good idea... 'A SPAM' as a country.
What a clever boy!

Probably have to make is AA Spam to get it to the top..

Posted by: EasyTarget

vBulletin does support the option of having to look at a photo and enter in the numbers / letters of the image before you can post. This option tends to be the most effective at reducing spammers.

Posted by: AkMike

If that'd apply to newbies with less than a certain number of posts it'd be a good thing!

"Aargh Spam!"

Yeah we do get a fair share of spam here on the forums. Luckily they get banned pretty quick though.

Hey folks, sorry for the late posting, but V bulletin allows us to put a control feature in place that allows for user verification of matching letters or numbers. It something I am working on fixing... there has been a lot of spam here recently, but I do think the moderators are trying to keep it off the board as much as possible and as fast as podssible.

I will update you as soon as we come up with what to do.

Posted by: AkMike

Is everyone aware of the little red outlined triangle in the lower left of every post? It 'reports' the post/spam to a moderator. It may help them to keep this site cleaned up some... Maybe??

The spam situation seems to be getting worse, now it seems to be most of the spam is PORN

More like spot the real posts amongst the spam!

JC

Posted by: azamuner

It's the Abu Dhabi brigade lately.

Posted by: Cheburashka

Censored again. Unbelievable!

Posted by: azamuner

Is that what happened? I wondered where a few of my posts went.

Posted by: waiting123

Nothing was censored. I went in and deleted a lot of the spam posts, there were a lot of posts that members wrote saying it was spam that was deleted with the thread.

We are trying to keep the forum clean, and keep the spam away.

Posted by: azamuner

No worries. We've certainly had a lot of spammers lately.

There is a verification payne upon registration, but it does not seem to be working.

Yes, I deleted and banned 5-6 people already today. I do believe that we do our best to keep the forum clean and catch the spamers early in the game.

Being on the east coast of Canada, I usually see the early morning spam but I report it right away because these spammers piss me off.

Hi Waiting, what about the idea of putting the * first post* from all the "abu Dhabi" posters in a holding pen or something? Then if it is a legit member the mod's could take the restriction off next day? I mean I don't think I have EVER seen a real poster from there, seems like 99% of the spam comes in the first post from a new "abu Dhabi" poster?
