Men with ear piercing

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This is widespread now in US, many men even pierce both ears.
I have had a single pierced ear since 1980, now it is 3 small rings in one lobe.
How prevalent is this in FSU? Would it make me stand out as a foreigner? Would it be wise to remove these during my visit to Ukraine? Do any FSU ladies have an opinion on this type of jewelry on a man?

Posted by: Chrismc

Personally I have not seen it in men in the FSU, but, they are becoming more trendy and adopting many Western styles and customs.

Posted by: GentleGiant

(cough) AFAIK in the UK only poofs and chavs have earrings.

Mind you, I know one who has EYELETS in his ears !!!!
Bloody great big ones; you can see daylight right through them.

I guess one would fit right in with the gay pirates in Russia and Ukraine. But if not, a pierced ear will definitely stand out. My advice: remove it.

Posted by: EasyTarget

LF: I would remove it, it will stand out, you may not want that type of attention.

Posted by: j_c

I'm struggling to think of any man I've seen or met in russia that wore an earing !!

However , if you want the attention , leave it in!!!

Regards

JC

Leave it to a Brit to have the most outspoken opinion where personal choice of appearance is concerned... :-)
I am a child of the California 60's... the age of hippies and counter-culture... I generally do not conform to opinion just because 'everyone' thinks one way...
I like my earrings and they have significance to me... each represents a loved one in my life that has passed. I do not change them or have elaborate decoration... 3 small rings from 2 cm to 1 cm.
I am not a 'poof' or 'chav' or slave to fashion... I did this before it was 'acceptable' adornment here and suffered the criticisms far more than you provide. ;-Ю
But I will remove them while I'm in Ukraine, out of respect for my lady, her family and general safety. She already knows I have these, does not seemed bothered but doesn't express opinion as to what I 'should' do while there. I think she likes me as I am... and that is wonderful. Another breath of fresh air after 'dating' American women and being told from the gate how I was or was not acceptable to their high standards (if the rings were solid gold or diamond encrusted, I might have fared better).
I promise, Manchester, if I ever seek your affection I will remove them as you ask. Kiss, kiss.
(All in jest - no ill-will meant or perceived)

The significance of the earrings really doesn't matter. The truth of traveling to the FSU is that the less you blend in, the more open you are to trouble. Ask any frequent visitor and they will tell you that the people who get mugged, price gouged, and shaken down by the militzia are those who look like tourists. The people who seem to blend in with the culture, speak some Russian, and know their way around have a great time and return unscathed.

Repeat after me: "I might be a hippie, but I will blend in! I will blend in! I will blend in!"

Have a great trip and keep us posted.

I've never seen any men with ear rings during my trips to Ukraine either. A refreshing lack of tatoo's also! Tanya said that tat's are for criminals as a general rule, and women never have them.

Tatoos are rather popular now, and many women have them. And it doesn't mean they are criminals.

My ex had a tattoo of a little bird done on her rump when she was younger.
By the time we split up, it looked like a flippin' condor!

If you look cute with rings in your ear, so leave them where they are and relax. If you look in different way among the rest people it means you are special.
Just be natural. If you feel yourself comfortable with earrings, why you should remove them?

Thanks, Weather.
You have a good head on your shoulders and I respect your opinion.

I was just stating my observations while I was in Ukraine and my wifes opinion. Belarus may be different... And ity must be taken into consideration any age difference...
I'm 53 and she is 48 so our "generation" has other opinions and experiences.

I also asked Tanya her feelings about this.
She finally responded (Cable and Internet was broken for 1.5 days at her home).
Here is her reply:
"Ken, about rings in ear in Crimea as and every where here is a lot
of people who have it. And not only in ear, sometime in very not
expected places. Myself I have never had this. But I am respect a
right of people to express ownself with this and others ways.
If you fill well with this, I will be feel well too.
The most important for me your personal qualities.
My parents think the same, I am sure. They are not limited,
intelligent, kind people."

So that is the only answer that really has any weight on the question for me. If, while there it looks to be a big deal, I can always take them out. I do appreciate everyone for giving me their experience and thoughts. It's been a pretty fun thread!

Well yes the age changes everything. But I think there always can be exceptions.

Well I was right in giving advice for you.

Yes, pretty girl, you are always right... some man will be very lucky to have you by his side!

Another way to look at this is: Every relationship has give and take. I dance in an antebellum group and a beard is the preferred facial accoutrement for men. Before I visited lola I asked how she felt about beards...I kind of knew but you never know she asked nicely if I would shave, so off it came. What did I get from that exchange? Well, I got her. Nice trade. Maybe she will let me grow a beard later, maybe her cheeks will never adapt to a beard. I have never been one to stand on fashion anyway. It was something I could do to make her feel (literally in this case haha) more comfortable. I never asked what her mother thought about beards but I wonder if that entered into this a little, also.

Hey Rocky!
I'm glad someone enjoyed it...
I've seen her since (not her rump, per se) and I expect it is moving into the classification of Boeing and FAA jurisdiction.
