Sending foodstuff to Ukraine

I was going to ship some Tupelo honey to my lady in Ukraine but she was concerned about customs... something I had failed to consider. The company does international deliveries so I assumed it was okay.
Any ideas how this would be handled? Will I be able to take it to her in my luggage when I go to visit?

Not sure what the rules are for importing that type of thing into Ukraine, but the only chance I think you have is to put it in the middle of your check in luggage, I doubt you would get it through in your carry on.

I have taken stuff in that way and not had a problem, I just make sure it is all wrapped up in towels or clothes and placed in the middle of my case, just in case it gets banged around at the airports.

Absolutely right way to ship it, Chris. With the new security on liquids and gels, that would be an item that would be confiscated---not for customs reasons, but rather, airport security.

It's been kind of a "Catch-22" at the airport lately. People always would take wine in their hand-carry, but this is not allowed anymore. The only thing you can do these days is wrap it up the best you can, in checked luggage, and hope for the best.

Thanks. I'm also taking a nice bottle of our fine California vintage for the father... Guess my checked bag will get a little heavier. I'll just get some heavy duty plastic bags and use my jeans for cushion. Worst that can happen is the stuff will be taken and thrown away.

I'll bet Daddy would appreciate some tequilla or mescal(love the worm angle) or some other hard stuff more. They can get Johnny Walker there but other types of hard liquor are appreciated.
Bascily things that are unavailable there are fun to try. Believe it or not Mac and Cheese and hamburger helper are a hit!

I think you will be OK I have taken wine and champagne etc that way also. Even when they lost all my baggage I managed to get it all back OK a week later

Is white wine preferred or are you simply referring to the potential luggage fiasco? What wines are common to the region, sweeter wines, or the more dry and complex?

Well, I've contacted the apiarist and had them redirect the honey to my house instead of Ukraine. I think it would have made it through customs of international mail (manufacturer packaging, doesn't exceed 10 kg) but better to be safe than sorry. I can always say at airport customs it is personal use (Ulee's Gold).
And she's very excited to know I'm bringing it and of the sentimental and special nature of tupelo honey... she even listened to Van Morissons song and loved it!

LF: put the honey in checked baggage. Make sure you put it in a ziplock bag incase it gets hurt during the plane ride.

Some countries and states (like Hawaii) are funny about shipping food. Best to bring with you.

Too right there, ET.
The only thing I want to arrive sticky sweet are my poems of love! LOL
BTW, I looked into the customs statements of Ukraine gov't, and while I could not locate the articles 1-24 of non-permissible food products, the jist of the statement was that items were permissible that were in manufacturers packaging, not greater than 10 kg, and not of live or perishable nature.
Whether honey (which qualifies to all the above) is excluded, I like the idea of presented in person even better!
This is a gift for her recent birthday... pair that with some beautiful perfume and I hope to begin to make one lady very happy... but mostly through things beyond gift-giving.
