Tax Write Off

Question for those engaged or married.

At what point did you guys start keeping track of your expenses on your wife and/or fiance for write off purposes?

And were you successful in doing so, especially in the fiance stage?

Anybody succesfully write off the visa app costs?

I know we all help our gals in some financial way. For example, medical exam costs for interview, did any of you bother or think to try and write that off?

I'm always keeping track of my expenses, especially starting this year since I will incur a lot of visa application expenses. Wanted to get a feel for what you guys did before talking to my accountant.

I've heard of writing off business expenses, but I didn't know you could write off personal expenses. I'd like to hear what your accountant says.

From what I understand, you are not able to write off these personal expenses (unfortunately... because there are a LOT of expenses!)

If you have your own business, you might be able to write off the cost of the airplane tickets, hotel and meals as a exploratory business opportunity. (This gets a little risky and the IRS doesn't like "vague.")

If you have a letter of invitation from a business in a foreign country (or collect a business card) you might be able to convince the IRS that you travelled for an interview. If that is the case, the pertinent costs (hotel, flight, some meals) are deductible.

I had my tax guy look over things for me when I flew to Tashkent for my ex-fiance. At that time, I was an independent consultant with my own business and I hadn't filed as a corporation yet. Unfortunately at that time, I wasn't able to write-off my expenses. I even planned to pursue a business between Tashkent and Los Angeles, but since that business wasn't in the same line of work that I currently do (Management/IT Consultant), my expenses weren't eligible as a write-off.

Hmmm, maybe it's just us advertising folks that can write off anything. Most people in advertising and the entertainment industry can write off anything because experienceing new things helps them to be better at their jobs. So with that said....

Khashyar, you're a producer, surely you must write off magazines, video games, trips and anything that involves spending money.

Hit the submit button by mistake.

So I know I can write of my trip airfare, hotel expenses and visa costs. But I'm guess you all got shot down on the other expenses huh?

Hmmmm, couldn't claim dependent?

If there are any educators on this forum, most likely you can write off your expenses as "educational travel" if you teach history, social studies, foreign language, ESL and maybe a few others I can't think of right now. My motto, "write it all off and take your chances."
