The difference? Leg room!!!

Mainly the service you get. In the upper 2 classes you get more personal service then the 3rd. They try to keep these areas free from the 3rd type of service so you feel more special. There are a few other things but that depends on the airlines you use. Also the cost!

Also, I believe that you receive your emails first, often receive free alcohol, and on some airlines, the seats recline all the way down so that you can sleep better....

Each airline probably has its own differences with first class...

You can weigh the significantly increased cost with the greater comfort that first class gives and see if it is worth it...

Q
what airliner has 3 levels?

All the airliner I know only have 2. First class and business should be the same.
Its the distance and especially the price difference who has an influence on whats best.

Some airlines has a triple price at the business level and I believe its not worth it.

On United (international), there are 3 classes of service: First, Business and Economy.

On domestic United and Lufthansa (in Continental Europe) there are 2 classes of service: First and Economy.

I flew Business and First Class cabin to Minsk. It's VERY well worth it. I wish I had done the same when I was engaged to a girl in Tashkent.

The differences:

First Class Cabin: (at least on United) Seats that fold flat into a flat bed, MUCH more leg room, much more personalized space, tablecloths, silverware and china used in your meals, salads tossed fresh by your seat, no charge for alcoholic beverages, first to board aircraft, juice/wine before push-back from the gate, in-seat video monitor, noise cancelling headsets, a bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, eyeshades and foot stockings, in-seat power point for laptops (though you need to buy an airline approved plug), and some flights offer internet access. On First and Business class, you're also allowed two carry-on bags and more weight in your luggage. You also have access to the VIP lounge before the flight.

Business Class Cabin: (at least on United) Seats that recline to about 30 degrees, leg supports and extensions, much more leg room (though not as much as First), tablecloth and silverware for meals (but less China than first class and no seat-side salad tossing), otherwise the rest is the same as First Class Cabin (including use of the VIP room before boarding and the ability to board the plane first.)

Economy Class Cabin: Cattle Car. Almost no leg room, no hip room in the seats, there's very little difference in recline of the seats (except to the person behind you who can't eat his meal with your seat reclined), and you'll want to make sure you take off your shoes and flex your legs, knees, ankles and feet every hour to prevent dangerous blood-clots from forming.

I have decided that I will never fly Economy on international flights again. It's barely tolerable on coast-to-coast flights (5 hours). If you do use Economy, get to the airport 3-4 hours in advance and ask for the Emergency Exit row. (Just don't get the seat the doesn't recline.) If that's not available, ask for the bulkhead seats. Years of working as a Consultant and travelling weekly hasn't helped to make me more tolerant of these tiny seats. If you're big like me (5'10", 250 pounds, broad shoulders), these seats really stink.

Personally, I advise looking for airlines that have partners and start accumulating points. Even if the airfare is a little more expensive, I try to use a "partner" airline to accumulate points so I can upgrade. Also, apply for a credit card with your favorite airline and use it exclusively to accumulate points. Most hotels will allow you to apply points earned in hotel-stays with them. Make sure that you can transfer these points to an airline as well (preferably your preferred airline.)

Hope that helps!

Hmm
I agree, the only problem at economy / tourist class is the leg space. (which is between 31 and 34 inch).
But I have a knee injurie from my soldier time and I have no problems at this class. Even when I flew across the atlantic.

My friend use this to when they go to Thailand, with a baby.

So the econimcal 'cattle' is satisfied.
