Would you speak to someone face to face the same you speak to "some" people here?

hey all

in the last few months i've noticed this site has become "RMP Smackdown" with every one b1tching to each other about each other.

i'm thinking to myself "hmmm i wonder if these guys or anyone actually would speak the same smack to people if they were face to face".

i know that it's pretty easy to get fired up about somthing and type smack, i have done it myself, and in that case i would have said it to his face.

i'm sure that there are some keyboard warriors on here that couldn't and wouldn't back their typed words up with actions yet they sprook sh1te to people all the time.

i'm talking about the personal attacks not the jokes and "use the search button jibes".

there are lots of people who will say something in an anonymous forum that they would never say in real life. This is one of the great features of the internet forums. Two edged sword to say the least. One can take that anonymity and use it wisely -- talking about personal issues, getting advice and not worrying about repercussions or negatively and belittle, bemoan and criticize individuals.

It is like a kitchen knife; what you do with it, is your individual choice. You can use it to peel potatoes or use it to stab someone in the back.

-----
I feel that the internet is great and I try and use it as wisely as possible. In that regard I try to choice my words carefully. There is a large percentage of communication that is reliant on interrupting the other person's body language.

A good example I can point to is that it is easier for me to understand someone when I can see them on a webcam versus just talking to them on the phone. There is no difference in language skills, so why is it easier to understand the person, body language.

If you were face to face with the person you may phrase something slightly different and use the right body language to say what you mean. I do feel that people are more easily offended on the internet because of the lack of body language.

I guess it is good to remind people that being a little overly cautious in wording to make sure you don't offend can go a long way. faces don't hurt either.

Yes I would, Why?

Most people would not say some things face to face. If you don't like what you hear, you can always to off the computer.

It is according to where I was at and the expectations....

I love to 'debate' issues with people and if we were in that situation, then yes, I would be just as sharp as I am here...

But with strangers, no...

The internet and forums are different... they are designed for debate and being open.. and sometimes it boils over...

Some people want to preach, some are rude, some are helpful, etc etc... if I don't like what I read from people, I can ignore them... ain't it beautiful???

In the exact type of situation (albeit face to face) the answer is yes I would. In another type of situation then maybe not. Say something I disagree with and I'll use my GOD given right to say I disagree and tell you why and give you the evidence of why I feel that way.

I suppose my style is to play devils advocate and try to see all points of view while getting others to expand their minds as well. If their minds stay closed or they are CONSTANTLY negative about everything but their own POV then I will eventually ignore them because they are just shallow.

I agree with Easy.

I've said before that, people are entiltled to their opinons and these sites are an opportunity to air them. The rest of us can agree or disagree. The problem arises when the actual respondents are attacked for their views.

When is it right and when is it wrong?

Peoples strong and sometimes weird, to our own thinking, Religious beliefs are a case in point. Attack their beliefs and you are attacking them.

Most members here are moderate, but contentious issues bring out the worst in some people.

I was criticised for promoting caution before ending correspondence with a possible scammer. But when that turned into a diatribe on how I was hurting people with my non-realistic views, I felt I had to fight back. It had become personal.

As long as we all stick to the subject and use facts and not aggression, this will continue to be a pleasant place for discussion and advice.

Hello all...... I had months ago declared I would not post anymore in this forum and up until now I haven't. I have however checked back regularly for info and updates. I would like to respond to this question as this is partially why I stopped posting in the first place.

There were several instances where I took a stand against some using opinion as fact and then got attacked. No my feelings were not hurt and nobody threatened me physically. But it appeared then there were some that were not open for debate. Their way or the highway. I didn't see that particular stand condusive to fostering debate or offering help to newbies so I chose the highway.

To answer the question at hand, I'm sure a minimum of half these people say things on the forum that they wouldn't dare say to one's face in public or private for that matter. I guess the anonyonimity of the net is too strong a draw and allows them liberties they normally wouldn't have in a face to face discussion.

I have in the past and expect I will always continue to post to everyone as if you were a guest in my livingroom knocking back a few brewski's. It doesn't mean I'll agree with you, but I will treat you with respect.

The edge with "face to face" people is that rumors and truth travel faster than phonies' delusions or fabricated glories.
There is a youngster at my gym who brags about being a "bouncer" and how he had hardboiled thugs run for their life and how women fall for him and how he's going to be on national TV soon and how wealthy he is...
Fact is, he's just been fired from a pub where he was a waiter; he has never had any thug jump for cover, but perhaps brought them a beer with a smile; he has phoned another gym members at midnight asking for help because the middle aged husband of the 40-something married (with 4 children ) moldovan waitress he courts wanted to "talk" to him.
There are 4 people in his family, and 3 have gone bankrupt already.

Another person has fabricated a lie in which he works at so'n'so as so'n'so and has bragged about how he earns big wages...in reality he works in his basement "unofficially".

A third lives on petty gray area business with illegal aliens, but boasts how he runs six nightclubs. Recently police caught him with a gun, process pending.

So everybody who's around knows these loons and doesn't bother to counter their elaborated phantasies because they aren't worth ten cents; they're a walking joke and people make them talk to laugh afterwards.

Over the internet it is easier to stalk or harass or criticize a person's every statement, but should one deal with REAL LIFE like that, they'd end in trouble soon.
I don't care to stalk or harass and i therefore say what i think.
4/5 of these cable tough guys are likely to be worth less than ten cents in real life, anyways.

This would be a good match, GTM vs Neal.

They can have a cage match.

Not this month Dags ... I have a different "wrestling match" to attend!

Posted by: dagpop

What do you mean by that GTM?

Are you going to wrestle a female? Would that be Trish Stratus or one of the GLOW girls.

I know you like them big.

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

Dags (I use the term Dags with affection) you never ceased to amaze me with your ability to drag pics into any topic. Only one other person that visits every so often seems to be able to match your ability, but as I haven't seen him in quite a long time I will say "Dags for king, long live the king".

Posted by: GoingToRussia

I think he better delete his girlie photo collection before his Russian wife sees it a grabs a hold of his @#%^&@!

that people just like are phoneys worth less than ten cents...
Since you like wrestling, Bobby Heenan once referred (copying Jesse Ventura ) to the ultimate warrior as "a million dollars body & a ten cents mind"...well, about some people, i ignore whether they have a million dollars body, but they do get a ten cents mind.

But feel free to improve your online persona...hard work always pays off...

Oz, it's an art that takes lots of practice.

I bow to thee master dags.

Ham, your crypticity amazes even me. Your online persona is all encompassing yet you encourage me to improve mine. Try cutting out the crap and maybe I wont have anything to discuss with you.

Posted by: ham

Actually, Jesse Ventura said "a million dollar body and a ten cents brain", while Heenan said "mind"...ten cents must be a lot of money "down under"...

but phoneys can "pipe up" to perhaps come closer to fifteen cents net worth.

aah, the internet... Osama bin Laden has NO such great personality as some down under teacher online...

I remember you telling us all a sob story how you were always misunderstood, you even had a go at one of your old uni lecturers during the story. I also remember you saying once that I was blocked yet you still reply to me. I know I'm irresistible but please cut the attitude with me, if I ask a question it is genuine and I expect a genuine answer not some cryptic and double talk that means jack to anyone bar yourself.

Yes Anto if I met Ham face to face and he was like this I would still talk to him in this manner.
