I believe I have said this before...each one of us needs to sit down and quantify--enumerate what we expect of ourselves, our spouse and our children. This applies without regard to where anyone is from. You have to have a roadmap to get where you are going.
And part of this process is: what are the deal breakers in the relationship. And yes, it can be your gut feeling. If your gut isn't happy, the rest of you sure isn't.

WOW, what a rollercoaster ride!!! After reading Shane Neff's report, I honestly had to take a step back and re-evalute every thing to this point. It hasn't deterred me from this, but, has made me more caustious. I don't feel comfortable about doing a back ground check, but I will to save myself from all of the trouble Shane Neff went through.
I would have given this woman the benefit of the doubt a couple of times, but after that, I would have sent her packing and not married her. It doesn't matter where you meet someone, there are good people and bad people. He met a bad one.

Ah, the Shane Neff story. He is quite the novelist and a very talented writer. I am a very good friend of Shane’s and know a bit about his tale of woe from years gone by. Basically Shane made a mistake all too many do in this process. He got engaged within the first couple of weeks of meeting and didn’t take the time to realise just what he married. He is the first to admit this when asked about his story.

Shane made the mistake of thinking with his heart and not his head and it came back and bit him hard. He was left a very bitter and twisted person from this experience for a few years, even setting up and co-moderating a yahoogroup called RWNA (Russian Women Never Again). Shane’s story is not one of why to avoid Russian Women but more one of what can happen to you if you rush such a relationship and don’t take the time to know each other.

Although spending a number of years bitter and angry over what hand he was dealt, he eventually jumped back on the wagon and found a great lady from just outside St Petersburg. He didn’t rush in this time and went over a number of times and spent over a year getting to know his lady before finally proposing. She arrived last year and last week they shared their first wedding anniversary. He has never been happier as well so while this chapter of his life has a dark side, the whole story of Shane Neff does have a happy ending.

Those of you who would use his story as a deterrent should be aware that if he was to write about his current marriage, it would probably be the most glowing endorsement you could find for marrying a Russian Woman.

What can you take away from this? That Ukranians are bad? Answer is no. Many people are married to Ukranian women and have great relationships. The simple underlying message of this whole story is to take the time to get to know your partner. Don’t go proposing after knowing each other for a couple of weeks. Relationships take time to build and the most successful ones are the ones where the partners took the time to know each other before committing to each other.

Great post Dave....I think that this now puts this thread to bed. While there was a bad angle / ugly side to this, in the end it did lead to what Shane now has a very happy loving relationship with a Russian lady.

How would you know? Another "great friend" of Shane Neff messages me yesterday but knew nothing about it. I guess Shane is very selective.

Days ago i was placing a comment on imdb.com and hit the wrong button, so i ended up on the "personal page" of a barely known supporting child actress of the 90s...i'm not joking there were at least 2-3 people claiming they knew her in person...and even one claimed to be the actress herself...of course they fought over who "really" knew her etc.
Later on, i was seeking a list of movies with another better known actress, but ended up on the page of a different actress with the same name. This "same name" person had barely three acting credits listed, of which two as "uncredited" (extra)...well, you won't believe it but there was an eight pages ramble stuffed (again) with different people who all knew her, or had gone to school with her etc claiming conflicting "insider's news".
Go figure...

Wu’s story was never one of success and anyone who sees it as such is a complete idiot in my eyes. The guy is a complete and bumbling idiot. Indeed. He is/was one of the most vocal pioneers and one of the first to be outspoken on the darker side of FSUW/WM relationships. Maybe he asked for it. Maybe he didn’t. As I said before, his post shouldn’t be used as a means to try and rubbish FSU women. The message it portrays is the dangers that you can face if you rush into this process without getting to know each other first. If armed with the information he possesses today back then, Shane would have been a lot more patient and might have seen some tell tale signs that might have avoided him going down the path he did.

Here is his reply: Thanks! Yes, I'm doing fine now. I went back to Russia in 2004 and met my future-wife. We just celebrated our one-year wedding anniversary last week.
The difference between that experience and the one I had in 1998 is like night and day - literally.

Now, are we going to focus on negatives or are we going to see what we can pull out of his experience to HELP others.

Thanks Steve. Bloody freezing down in Melbourne. 5 degrees last night. Ankle is coming along. Still got a limp, cant run and stairs are a major hassle but its getting better slowly. Hopefully will be fully heal by summer our time in about 6 months. Good luck with your new lady cobber

It is so good to hear Shane Neff found the love of his life. There are good and bad relationships in ALL countries. It isn't fair to say ALL FSU women are bad because they are from Russia. I have met FSU women who are sweet ladies and are genuine in their quest to find a lifetime mate. Sure there are women out there who would love to take a guy for everything he has, but, they are all NOT Russian. So, give the good ones a break!!!!
