I have been doing some background reading on Russia and the FSU. Obviously sexual harrassment and discriminatory practices are common in the FSU. But some sources make it sound like it would be unusual for a woman to REFUSE to sleep with her boss. From what I know personally, this seems like a great exaggeration.

Does anyone have any knowledge or informed opinion about how often sex between employer and employee is "part of the job"? Is this more likely in certain sectors or places? What strategies do women have to resist these pressures?

The only thing I know is if a man in Russia cusses out a woman and she doesn't have a husband or male friends who will defend her, she is basically out of luck. I know women trying to flag a taxi often have a man stand by them so the driver doesn't think she is a hooker looking for a John.

I have also read many stories over the net about this. Not 2 or 3, but 20 or 30.
I have asked me lady and she confirm this. She has been given job offer, but only if she ...
She also confirm that some of her friends has to do it, to even get paid.

The strange part, is they don't see it as being bad if they don't have a husband or boyfriend !!! They need a little action sometimes, and to combine it with promotion / money is just ok.

Please keep in mind that you are looking at a whole different country. You can not apply American laws to them. So don't be shock too much when you hear of things like this.
Just realize these things happen and there is not too much you can do about it from the US.

What is that old saying? "ignorance of the law is no excuse"

I know it is common. It is regrettable, but not surprising. But would you say it is UNUSUAL for a woman to refuse to sleep with her boss? It just seems that there must be some way around it.

Personally, I don't know. I would say it is believable that this could happen.
I look at it this way, all I have to do is sleep with this idiot and I can buy a few extra things for my kids? or he will fire me if I don't do this and I can't find a job that pays the way this one has.

My GF makes good money in Moscow. She is usually paid a small part in rubles (for taxes) and the rest in dollars. In November her boss paid her in rubles only, which was a big pay cut. There is nothing she could say or do about this.

So as you can see, why women do this.
