Need Help Translating one Very important Phrase

Hello All!

A last minute family emergency came up and my Russian girlfriend can not make our trip to Thailand. (Been together for 2 years met the family etc etc very important to me)

We are not rich but saved up both for half a year to fund this trip. Because its last minute she is loosing all the money for the ticket she booked (says she booked the 'cheapest way' and her agent won't refund her)

Anyways... I'm still going because its a long planned family trip too but i will be meeting her in St. Petersburg as soon as I can get my Visa ready. The help i need is I need to know how to translate this phrase into Russian (with the cyrillic if possible)

My Idea is either to get everyone of the hotel staff togetehr and hold up a big sign saying that or take a picture of every different place we went to and have the sign up and send them to her.

See if this works. The first word really means desire, might be a little strong. But they will get the message.

Wish you were here! Жаль, что ты не со мной! may be more correct for these purposes.

Sorry, it does not make sense. Weather-7's suggestions are good, though we don't have a phrase in Russian absolutely identical to Wish you were here.

If you mean that you would like her to be with you, it may be translated as

Я бы хотел, чтобы ты была рядом со мной .

If you mean that you would like her to be somehere (here), it is likely to be

Я бы хотел, чтобы ты была здесь.

In both cases a male adresses his message to a female. It is important because of agreement of grammatical genders.

That must be the difference between men and women. I thought your translation read "It is a shame that you are not with me". To me, that seems different than "I wish you were here". But like Seaview said, there is no identical phrase in Russian. I guess that is what makes us foreign guys entertaining...we bluff our way through it.

I always understood "wish you were here" to have an implied "with me"!

Sorry to jump into this thread a bit late but I just noticed it now.

A little birdie from Moscow whispered to me that these phrases would also convey what you need:

я хочу чтоб ты была здесь

(lit: I want that you were here)

я хочу чтоб ты была рядом

(lit: I want that you were near / next to me)

я хочу чтоб ты была рядешком

(same as previous but рядешком is more affectionate than рядом e.g., dog / doggy

)

1. word чтобЫ instead of чтоб would sound better in those sentences.

2. "Я хочу" assumes/suggests that that who says that is going to do something to make that his/her wish comes true ( especially if it's spoken by a male, who just MUST

do something) But as there is nothing male in question is going to do in order to solve a problem then it should be Я хотел бы, чтобы ты была с мной.
Though this word combination ( я хотел бы) also still holds some "hope" he would do something. But as there is nothing he could do in that particular situation therefore it should be just Мне жаль, что тебя нет рядом со мной. ( мне жаль is more close in meaning to "I'm sorry/pity/disappointed it didn't happen but nothing I could do")

3. That's рядЫшком
(And that's too "sugar" for males lexicon word to my mind)

All above is just IMHO

Can I ask, what's the difference between чтоб and чтобы?

No difference in meaning, just "better sounding"
