Interview for job

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mistermopar

Good news,I just recieved a letter for a phone interview.
The job is in Russia,I am hoping that it is for Volgograd, that is the location that I asked for,but they do have schools all over Russia.

I am excited,nervous and LOL....scared.

It has been over 16 years since I have done an interview.

I don't have the job yet,so I will not hold my breath,I may not get it.

Just wanted to share this with yous.I will keep yous up dated as to how it gos.

Congrats Randy! You'll have to cut down on the smoking for the interview. You don't want to sound like a frog or the Godfather over the phone!

Good luck!

Heh.. I think this one might be a little more challenging.
Some general ex pat hints I can offer..

Try not to get upset when things go wrong - because they will. FREQUENTLY.

Sometimes the easiest task to do at home will be the most complex thing to do somewhere else. (Did I tell you in Oman the post office doesn't sell envelopes?) I still don't have a home phone here.

Especially be prepared for battles over paperwork.

Make sure you work out who is going to be paying for what.. in your contract.
Work hard at building up a friends network as quickly as possible - because you will need it!

Be flexible and try as many new things as possible.. But I don't suggest trying the lighter fluid variants of Vodka.. I would really suggest keeping in close contact with Bing via phone if he is agreeable as I would think he could be invaluable help.

Take as much stuff as you can reasonably afford so you don't have to replacr it all but don't take too many items you aren't prepared to walk away from if it all goes pear shaped and you have to get out of there FAST.

Good luck with it all!

Also I would think that the phone interview is going to be about how serious are you about moving to Russia. They don't want to waste time.

Good luck randy, you can do it mate!

I had a phone interview for a job while I was in russia and my biggest tip is don't speak too quickly .. it helps you organise your thoughts better and they will probably understand your words better too. It's also ok to take some pauses ..slow and steady is the way.

everyone gets nervous before these things .. just try to keep your breathing deep and slow, and relax the muscles in your face and neck, it really does help.

Please let us know how it goes!

scotch.

PS. what sorta job is it? english teacher? nude banya assistant? trolleybus driver?

Posted by: bingism

Hi Randy,

First good luck... second, don't worry about it too much. You will need to give a good reason as to why you want to move to Russia and in particular Volgograd (I like the look of the girlies is NOT a good answer lol ). They may also ask you about something to do with teaching and if they are a real jobsworth, you might get asked to explain something like:

"What is the difference in use between the present simple and present perfect tenses?"

Wouldn't stress if I were you. Just remember that there is NOT a huge flood of people wanting to work in Volgograd and that you are still quite a catch just because you're not Russian

It probably has something to do with snow removal since he has a lot of experience with that in northern Canada ... take off hoser!

Posted by: Jerico

Hey Randy,
Good luck iwth your prospect ,Hehe.
You will be lucky if it is Volgograd.
You can still live pretty cheap here I imagine.
It a nice little city compared to Moscow.

It may not pay much but it is a different scene your probably not used to, heh.

WHo knows maybe I could introduce you to some of the women there I met if anything for friends.
Elena was a nice woman and she teaches English at some school there ( SHE was a lifesaver) dont know if I have her email anymore though. She showed me the city and interpreted between my old girl and me.
If you get a job there and are interested PM me and I will try to hook you up with her of course maybe she has moved or something.
Anyway good luck
Jerry

Come on then Randy how did you get on

Posted by: mistermopar

Well....it was not as smooth as I was hoping.
I found myself at a loss for words at times,or just didn't know what they were asking.
Is it because it has been a while since I took my course or is it that the course was not good enough.

Also I have no experiance in teaching, never been in frort of a real class.

She did mention that she had a good feeling about me and would recomend me,but that I would need to do some training and maybe do a 9 month internship before I would be let lose on a class of my own.

Now I have to wait.I am happy that is over with.

Oh well Randy, you had to have a first one at some stage, if it doesn't work out then there are always more, out it down to experience anyway. At least now you will know next time what to expect.

Watch out for the word internship. My girl's friend's son has had many internships as a chef. When his internship is complete, they don't hire him.

Better luck next time Randy. You'll be better prepared.

Posted by: Big wheel

Better luck next time. At least you know what they are looking for.

Posted by: mistermopar

Thanks GTR and Big wheel,I will have to wait to see what they will offer with it and if it will be worth it.I will get to Russia some how some day.It has almost been a year since I was there and really miss it.

Randy

Posted by: GoingToRussia

WOW almost a year! It doesn't seem that long. I need a Russian fix about every 4 or 5 months ... not sure if it's the food or the women!

Posted by: EasyTarget

Randy: I think you were just rusty at the interview process. Also maybe before the next interview, you give yourself a crash course (2-3 days) through the material to remind yourself of the important things.

Also you might to check on the web for interview tips.

I am chalking this one up to lack of formal interview for several years ~ with the added difficulty of interviewing for a foreign company. Next time you will knock their socks off.

Hey randy mate,

sounds like a tough interview, and as everyone says, regardless of the outcome it's all good experience. And anyway it aint over til the fat lady sings Ive scored jobs before in the past where I haven't been overly happy with my interview performance.

While I was in Russia last year I had 2 job interviews .. one was over the telephone to work at an infertility treatment clinic in moscow, and the other was face-to-face to teach at an english school. Both were really difficult interviews, I think maybe because I was more conscious of choosing the right words so they could understand me. But I felt nervous and could feel the sweat pouring off me (mind you it was also 36 C degrees in the city I was living ).

so I hope the decision comes in your favour but if not there will be plenty of other opportunities for a good bloke like you. And as Easy said it's important to brush up on all the grammar concepts before the call so you can talk confidently about them. In fact Im doing something similar now as I have a job interview first thing tomorrow morning

see ya matey,

scotch.

No, just a revelution! Can you imagine being a citizen in Russia in the late 19 teens? This is when my ancestors left Russia, just before the revelution.

Just think..I will be able to report from the other side once I am there

Well,I hope they don't have any cyclones/hurricanes/tornadoes/great floods etc,not my cup of tea...

Randy

Posted by: Zharis

Congrats, Randy. I'm seriously considering this also but will probably end up doing a year in South Korea first (was stationed there when I was in the army)...sounds like they have a real shortage of teachers over there and the pay seems pretty decent. If all goes well there I will probably then look into trying to land a position in Ukraine or Russia...I love other cultures so am really excited about doing this. Threads like this have such great information, nice to hear from people who have actually done it or are in the process of doing it.

Posted by: mistermopar

Thanks Zharis.
It will be a big change in my life but I feel it is something I need to do,I have become stuck in a rut in the job I am at now with no room to addvance.Plus my daughter is off on her own now and I have nothing to hold me back.

Well,as a matter a fact, there is a Dart over there...a few years ago a Russian man wrote to a MOPAR mag that I get.He needed help on figuring out what gears he had in the rear end.He lived in Moscow, even sent a photo of it,to bad it was a four door.

Thanks ET,I am going to have to start with the list soon,I can't keep my mind strait right now.Finish the house, sell the house, get blood work for the HIV test so I can get the visa, figure out what to do with allll my cars and furniture.... AHHHHHHH.

I know I will get through it,I have great friends on here that will keep me going.

which is about a 26hr train ride on train#437

Oh come on...next you will be telling me that you have bridge for sale. :-)

Well it most likely does seem a huge task but make the list, and soon enough you will have everything planned out. I do like the idea of selling or donating all of the stuff you have accumulated over the years. Helps give you a fresh start. Set up an eBay account ~ I am sure you will get lots of buyers.

I would suggest buying a laptop in Canada and bringing it over. Most laptops can switch from 110v to 220v, or you can just get the plug adapter. It will be fine. You will most likely want the Canadian version of Windows. The version that doesn't try and correct the spelling of hoser. :-)

By the way how many does till you plan on leaving.

Hey Randy,
This may be better taken to email, but I want to suggest one thing:
...do NOT dump it all until at least after the first contract... I've nearly jacked it in a few times and I would've really regretted selling up before I left... if you can, rent it and get the cars into storage

About the laptop, the prices aren't much different here (might actually be a bit higher than the US). You won't need a power adapter and laptop power supplies can handle 110/220/240V - I'm quite sure anyways... don't worry about the internet... easy as pie

Posted by: bingism

PS. about the HIV test... either make sure it's done completely "off" your medical record or ask the school if you can get it done over here. In the UK, if you have a test on your medical record, insurance companies have a tendency to hike your premiums!!! TBH, none of us here have actually been asked for the paperwork. You'll get a 3-month visa initially and then the work permit papers come later (you need the test for that - well, if you're from the UK, anyway).

The distance from Ufa to Volgograd is really not all that far, thanks for the distance and train number.

I will be selling the house, alot of things will be stored at families place,I hope.
It is a good time to get rid of things I have just been holding onto just incase I may need them some day.

Thanks for the info on the laptop,I really do not know to much about them.

Number of days till I leave....I would guess sometime in August.

hehe..... actually one has and does on occasion make up the answer, but it goes along the lines of "some people do use that construction"; "there's a big academic argument about that"; "interesting question, but we'll come to that another time"; and my old favourite "sometimes there's no good reason - it's just the way it is and you have to learn it".....

LOL,I just put the sign up on Saturday, and have had 3 showings,Sun.,Mon., and Tues.
There are no bargins here in the Timmins area, prices have jump up 30% in the last 3 to 6 months.
Ok,while I was writing this I got a call from someone wanting to look at it.They wanted to see it right away, they were calling from a cell phone sitting in my drive way.So now I have also had a showing for Wed.

There are so few houses for sale here.A house around the corner from me went for $15 000 above asking,I would have never belived it,but was showen the papers.
One reason for the boom is that De Beers is opening a dimond mine close to here, and this is the biggest city/town close to it.

I don't know what things are like in the USA but things are overvalued in a lot of places back in Oz now. Because of the "sub prime" lending market a lot of marginal people got loans some years ago which forced up prices. Now a lot of those are going through the agony of foreclosure. I don't know which is worse.. that you never buy a place or you buy a place, love it.. but lose it because you never could really afford it.

I think in Sydney something like 70% of all sales are mortgage defaults.

There was a recent report I scanned that said to get into the property market in most large regional centres in Aus you needed an effective salary of $100k a year. I guess that applies to houses.

I know what I was looking at a place, getting a loan was the easy part. The size of the repayments scared me off. And that wasn't even a house but only an apartment/flat.

I'll be looking at getting into the market in about 1.5 years time. We should have a more sizeable deposit by then and will be able to rent the place out for a year getting extra repayments down before we get back to Oz.

The other option I am looking at is actually German real estate since that actually looks very reasonably priced and Germany still has some way to go in their economic recovery.

Posted by: EasyTarget

Hawaii the real estate market is NOT cooling off. 4 years 150% growth in prices. Granted we have no more room to build houses. Plus when they build condos they only build super - luxury i.e. >$800K per unit. The housing market is so expensive that there is a serious brain drain in Hawaii. All the post grad students can't find a job that can pay enough so they can afford to rent an apt.
Plus most of the working force is aging >50 years old. Creating havoc.

Then we have the sub-prime fiasco. Too many lenders were getting super creative with the loan agreements so couples in the 120 - 200K annual salary range were taking out jumbo loans, 40 year, ARM with interest only payments. Which really drove up the prices. Now they are hitting the 3 and 5 year mark and people are going -- ouch. Its their own damn fault not reading the fine print.

bloody hell

Randy, if there is a boom coming why not rent it out and pick up the extra $$$ in a year or two when prices have shot through the roof

I had thought of it,but I want to leave here not owing anything.I have a visa card and a line of credit to pay off, plus the remainder of the morgage.
Renting it out would not cover all the payments.

I will already be more than doubling what I payed for the house.Sometimes holding out for the extra can end up biting you in the back side.

Same in the USA Deccie. Our stock market took a big hit because of all the foreclosers and the new housing market going down.

It is very possible GTR that it is the same one.
I know they have to bring in supplies in the winter by trucks across the ice.
The winter that just passed it was very late in freezing and I think it was hundreds of trucks lined up for weeks waiting for the ice to be thick enough.

The only other way in is to fly,but they can not fly in the the amount of supplies that they need in the small planes.

My sister works for a company that has a contract at this mine and was going up and staying there. It is a dry site (NO BOOZE).

Yep, sounds like the same one. These guys waited a long time for the ice because they couldn't fly in the heavy machinery they needed. Very interesting story. I thnk it is on the Dicovery channel.

I'll take a stab at the word Hoser... But coming from Bob and Doug, it could be sort of a joke between the two.

Randy I don't quite think it means a loser. I think more in the way one buddy does something ridiculous, silly or maybe even stupid. For this action could be the work of a hoser. But it is all in fun so don't take it to heart.

Posted by: AkMike

I was guessing that it meant something like teaser-kidder. I played a prank on them when they said it..

When you see it you will understand basically they still wear high heeled pointy toed shoes or boots, in winter on snow and ice to balance they shuffle their feet along rather than walk, so their feet sort of slide over the snow/ice ratrher than a typical walk where you lift feet off the ground.

One smokinghotkova is enough, but two together linked arms with the shuffle at full speed is a sight to behold I think it must be unique to the FSU

.

Yes all in the name of looking good, even snow and ice don't stop them in that pursuit, if olyu even see three of them linked together WOW!!

Posted by: Cheburashka

Deyvushki in winter can defy the laws of physics. How they keep gravity at bay and walk briskly over black ice is beyond me. That is one sure fire way to spot the American tourists: watch them walk on icy Moscow streets slipping and sliding.

For those who have never experienced Russia in winter, here are three pics that will give you a taste of the fun. Note the lady walking through the snow in pic #1

Now get a mental picture of Randy with hairy legs showing trying to walk on 4 inch heels.. Now picture that on glazed ice.
