Well, my time in Ufa may be coming to an end....

Bottom line is that the school has "just" realised that I hav to return to the UK to get a new visa (I'm on a business and it needs changing to a teaching/working one). Can you believe that they are thus far refusing to pay for the travel costs and the visa, stating that they will give me back 50% in 6-months and 50% in 12!!!

Now, this is OK for the first year since many people come and then disappear quickly, so the schools have to protect themselves. However, to be asked to do this when it they've known me a tear already, plus I am settled here, is just too much.... plus, I just don't have the 30,000 it will need!

Looks like the only option at the moment is to return to the UK, find a residential summer job for a few months to save some money and pay for an apartment for Zhanna, then return in September. Pardon my French, but F**KING A**HOLES....... (mods, feel free to delete that part should you so wish lol)....

This country is messed up.... period!

Ahhhhh..and now we see the truth about Russia. There is so much beauty and adventure. But NOTHING IS EASY OVER THERE...NOTHING!!!!! Doing anything is a total and complete pain in the a$$. And in my experience, those with noble intentions like ESL teachers and orphanage workers end up getting dicked most of all.

I understand why so many just throw up their hands in frustration and say "I'm outta here". It is a total paradox why it is so hard to help a country that needs so much help.

Martyn

Sorry to hear about this, when I was with you, you mentioned doing some private work, I don't suppose there is any chance of more of that to get you through, earn some extra to get you back out there is there?

You have already probably considered it, but just a thought? OR what about some of the other English schools you mentioned or that Government work? any chance of more temp work, or do you have to sort out the visa issues prety swiftly??

Just trying to throw a few options up for you.

Chris

Cheb, I completely agree with you on this. The only guy I know to make a long term multi year success at living in Russia has only been able to so because he bought his place. Even then it is not easy.

Most of the small business owners I read about whether ex pat or local seem to face an uphill struggle every single day. The number of time the goal posts change is frightening sometimes. Even to get my first wedding date appointment took three visits and a gift (read bribe) and we HAD all the paperwork!

Bing, good luck with it. I am sure you will find a solution. Just don't resort to your past solution huh?

Martyn, sorry to hear about the situation.
So the company you work for is not so great,or it is the same with all of them when it comes to visa's and travel costs.

Sit down and have a cup of tea and think out your options. If there was anything I could think of I would tell you.

Sorry you are having troubles bing, hopefully something good can somehow come out of it for you.

Are private lessons to work up the money an option?

For the future, you might find it cheaper to set up your own company and invite yorself - you will need to join the Chamber of Commerce as well so you need to be bona fide - for example do you teach privately? It costs about 10000 (Roubles) + CoC membership - 5000 Roubles. This is no different to the UK. If you are on a business visa you can only receive expenses. You cannot get paid. You have to return to your home country to apply for a new visa. Always, everywhere. The school sounds a bit on the mean side. They could give you 50% upfront in consideration of your previous work.

And begging your pardon. Good Luck.

BTW - You should get $10 an hour for doing Private Tuition in English even to schoolchildren. I guess you have a contract with the school that stops it?

Hi Volga Trader,do you have to return to your own country to apply for the visa.
I was told you only have to leave the country you are in for a set amout of time and apply for a visa to enter it again,it did not matter what country you went into, but didn't have to be your own.

I will look into this more, could it be differant for differant countries?

You are right. I was keeping it simple. In the Russian case, you merely have to leave Russia. Many in Moscow go to Lithuania for a long weekend.

Sometimes I'm just plain surprised.... the school backed down completely!!! They've booked and paid for the tickets plus they'll pay the visa costs too... why do things have to be this difficult??? Oh yes, it's Russia... hehe
