There are a couple that I liked, but I'll admit that my palate isn't the best judge of authentic Russian cuisine. (But if you want my opinion on great Chinese food, I can give you that! ;-)

Uzbekistan
7077 W. Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA
(323) 464-3223
(NE corner of Sunset & La Brea)

I liked the food quite well. The bread is to die for (but is denser than authentic Uzbek bread) I liked the Sashlik and the plov. The plov can be ordered with lamb (authentic) or chicken (tasty, but not really available in Uzbekistan.) They also serve Baltica 3 and 9... so if nothing else, you can have authentic beer! I have taken my mom there a few times and we've enjoyed it very much.

A note: The place looks like the proverbial "hole in the wall" and parking is typical "small strip mall" difficult, but it's quite nice inside and I think it's worth it.

Russia Restaurant
1714 Ivar Avenue
Hollywood, CA
(323) 464-2216

The restaurant is actually quite nice inside. They have live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. The food is very, very good (IMHO) but it does take a while after ordering to receive it! Sometimes up to 30 minutes! But the food I've had was very good and worth the wait. I enjoyed the borsch, the pelmini, and the Chicken Kiev. Their Eggplant Caviar is also quite nice.

It's a pain to find parking for this place! There's some pay lots that are north of the restaurant. Park there! Trust me... the aggrivation of finding street parking can put a damper on the experience.

Also... bring a jacket! For whatever reason, the last time I visited the restaurant with my mom, it was COLD inside! Cold enough to hang meat? I dunno. Maybe to add to the authenticity of the experience (since it's winter in Russia and all, y'know! ;-) It may be better now.

Hi Tasha....

I hve actually only eaten at one Russin restaurant in L.A., and it was o.k.... It is called the "Russia House" On Ivar Street in Hollywood just north of Hollywood Blvd....

I had some of their vegetarian food, and it was ok (I had some borsh and an eggplant dip)....

I think that the owners are Russian Armenians.

There are several Russian Restaurants in the Hollywood area, the rest of which I have not tried yet.

And, of course, everyone knows that there are many Restaurants on Santa Monica Blvd. near Fairfax Ave....

Sunset Avenue (a few blocks west of La Brea Ave.) also has a couple of Russian Restaurants (one of the retaurants apparently has good live Russian music).

The Russia house also has live Russian singers and musicians on weekends.

I will try to get some addresses of some of these restaurants and post them here.

What are some of the retaurants that you have tried that you DIDN'T like??

Wow Aqua... that's a horrible story! And both you and your husband are absolutely within your rights to be upset. I don't understand how these restaurants stay in business with terrible service like that!

Just be glad you're near the LA/Burbank area! I have to drive back to LA on the weekends to enjoy any kind of ethnic diversity! Orange County is the land of Hamburgers, hot dogs and Mexican Food. There's no Russian cuisine to be found ANYWHERE in Orange County! (At least, not through searching online, through OC Weekly and the yellow pages!)

As for the Russia Restaurant on Ivar... expect service to be pretty slow. I don't know why... but it just is!

On the other hand, Uzbekistan was really good in terms of service and I enjoyed the food. (I know it's really a mix of traditional Uzbek and Russian fare, but it's good nonetheless!) If I had to recommend one over the other, I'd definitely recommend Uzbekistan.

Another restaurant I've heard about (but have not tried) is Diaghilev. It's kind-of a fusion of Russian and French cuisine. (I can't picture it either!) It's rated as an 'expensive' restaurant by the LA Dining guide and Zagat's, but the reviews are mostly decent. It seems like it's not "traditional" Russian cuisine though. I'd probably only consider this restaurant as a "novelty" rather than a "fix" for the Russian cuisine craving.

Diaghilev's is at:

Diaghilev
1020 N. San Vicente Blvd
W. Hollywood, CA
(310) 854-1111
(cross street: Harratt and San Vicente)
RSVP: recommended

"Russian Roulette" in Century City is OK. But I really liked the show in "Troyka" on Sunset Blvd. And all my american friends really liked it too. Asking me now when are we gonna go there again?

Here is the web site with all LA restaurant's addresses

Thanks, Julietta, for the feedback and the information...

And welcome to the Russian Meeting Place

In our forum's business section for L.A., we also have a pretty complete list of L.A. restaurants and shops.

Thanks,

Khashyar
