Hello,
Maybe you guys already know about this, but I just found out. I am currently in the process of "getting to know" a man in Russia and I want to talk to him on the phone. He sent me a message saying this:

"Do you know about Skype? We can talk by the means of this programme without phone!
You can download this programm from Internet. You must register, using nickname and password. You must use microphone and dynamics or phones. And of course, it for free, if you have unlimited internet connection!"

So, check it out if you're interested!

My wife uses Skype to call her parents and friends in Russia....everyday, it is nice, because it is free and no time limits.

However both parties must have a computer for it to be free. My inlaws have a DSL connection and it works perfect, very clear and no interuptions.

Good luck on your endeavor with a Russian companion.... It is a wonderful and great journey!

Yes skype is great if you both have broadband.
I talk to Olga every day on skype.
You can use camera's too if the connection can handle the extra load.

My Olga has only a dial up connection at home. From what I have read about Skype, a dial up is too slow for adequate sound quality. I usually call her on the land line, as even on the mobile phone connection it is difficult to understand each other (and she speaks english well). So if Skype is no better than the mobile phone... that's no good.

Has anyone experienced Skype with something less than a broadband connection on either end? Is the sound quality sufficient?

SKYPE IS LIKE AIR. I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT!

I use Skype and a web cam everyday.

My fiancee talks to her brother using Skype, he has dial up. It is difficult to hear but can be done.

Skype to landline is still cheaper than many international call packages; especially if your lady is in an unusual place.

I agree Giant.Liuda and Angelina arrived back in Siberia this week and skype has been really usefull.

We have dial up here, the average speed is 45.2 kbps and for our use it's fine for Skype useage. Tanya talks to friends and family alot with it. Even some old long lost friends of hers found her thru it.

Can't you do the same thing with Yahoo chat? I talk to a woman in Kherson on Yahoo with a mic and use a web cam at the same time and its free.

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Not sure about Yahoo chat but you can with Yahoo Messinger. Calling to Moldova using Skype produces better sound and video then using Yahoo. Not sure if it works better in other countries.

It seems that in addition to better voice it cuts out alot less. But on dial up there is a time lag. Not too bad but some once in a while.
It's also free like Yahoo messenger.

Skype is much better quality than yahoo in my experience for both phone and video/video chatting.

Make sure you actually do a comparison however. I found that from the US to Belarus it is cheaper to buy a phone card.

We use skype and yahoo (more than skype) almost everyday. Both are good but you do have days when one one works better than the outer.

goodluck lady

I sometimes use skype and other times internetcalls.com

Not every one in russia has BB or good access to a PC so the landline way is the way I go.

internetcalls is currently 10 euros (15 dollars) for 4 months of unlimited calls to amongst many others countries Russian landlines....

Leprechaun, the Dollar is not worth what it was; isn't it time you switched to a more stable currency, like the Rouble??

hahaha!!

Not unless you expect your girl to pay for her calls! you big meany hehehehe ;o)

I wasnt going to give the dollar but I didnt want anyone to feel left out!
including my "poor" americans friends ......are the the russians considering to tie the rouble to the euro instead (i think i read that somewhere recent)

today 10 euros is 14.74 dollar I was trying to talk up your economy with the extra few cent!!! so with the other 26 cent you can go out and treat yourself to a candy bar knowing that you are going to save a fortune in telephone calls by using the internetcalls.com services where skype is not an option.

Posted by: blucatz

Where can you get a candy bar for 26 cent? I will take 2 of them...LOL
