Guidelines for Moderators in the RMP

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Khashyar

Hi Everyone,

I feel that our Moderators do a very good job at being as fair as humanly possible in Moderating threads.

I value their dedication in wanting the RMP to be a resource that benefits others.

Just so forum members know what we Moderators expect from ourselves, here are some guidelines for moderators:

1) They of course will lead by example, and will follow the forum guidelines about posting and etiquette.

2) Moderators will only edit posts that A) have SPAM or unauthorized advertising, or B) express a personal attack.

3) A Moderator can close a thread that is CLEARLY moving in an unproductive direction, where there are personal attacks, flames, or discussions that are WAY off topic (for example, where there is consistent arguing where the topic is not being discussed).

4) To help give everyone confidence in Moderators' objectivity, Moderators will NOT edit or close a thread in which they have posted. This means that only a Moderator who has NOT posted in a thread can edit or close that thread.

Thanks for posting this Khashyar.
I think these are very well thought out guidelines.

I think that these new guidelines, coupled with the guidelines that we already have, will ensure that Moderation is fair and as objective as humanly possible.

Although this can be endless, I suggest the moderators should, where they do take the step of editing a post, include in that post, as post script outlining their reasons and reference to a particular rule or guidline they have invoked.

I also suggest that a PM be sent to the original poster with a detailed explanation, which at times is not appropriate to post in the thread itself.

I agree, on the whole, the Mods do a reasonable job, but I have also seen some extremely poor performances and worse justifications for certain actions.

To elaberate on the point of Mods leading by example, and at the risk of sounding like a broken record, can the Mods please tidy up their formatting as some of the posts are all but unreadable.

All credit for working towards improvement.

Hi I/O...

I like the idea of informing the person WHY their post was moderated (referring to a forum rule, which most likely is going to be because of a personal attack)... I suppose a Mod can post the reason why in that thread?

As far as leading by example, I agree that forum Mods should follow by example by following the forum guidelines themselves, but people have different styles and experiences with writing, and since the forum guidelines don't mention anything about grammar and punctuation, I don't think it's appropriate to address someone's grammar or writing style.

Thanks for your suggestions.
