Hi guys,

liuda has baby in a few weeks and i will be there during birth but returning after about two weeks.
We are a bit confused as we want to bring baby home in june but are not sure of best way.
I was going to go to moscow on way home from Siberia and apply for a British passport for baby, but liuda said there may be problems as baby wont have a russian passport as they are not keen on dual citizenship.

Do we need to get a visa for baby? we are really not too sure what to do.
Any advice would be appreciated.

It is implied above that the birth will be in Russia?
If that is the case I would just worry about the Russian Passport, then register your birth with the UK authorities and organise a British Passport on your own.
This would be technically frowned upon but many Russians seem to do it anyway.

Well, I am a US citizen and had my baby in Armenia so the rules may be different, but for what it's worth we registered the birthday first at ZAGS, then at the US Embassy which issued a consular report of birth abroad (the equivalent of a US birth certificate). With that, we were able to get the baby a US passport. However, the baby DID need an Armenian visa in order to be able to LEAVE Armenia (found that out at the airport--oops!). Anyway, not sure if any of this is relevent, but it may be...The baby has only US citizenship--we didn't bother trying for dual citizenship.

Your wife is mistaken. Russians don't care if you have however many citizenships. As long as the baby has been born in Russia to one Russian parent, and as long as the other parent does not have any objections, a child is going to have a Russian citizenship. Your course of action should be as follows:
1. Contact the British embassy beforeahead and find out what papers they need for the baby to get a british passport.
2. Once the baby is born, register her birth with ZAGS and get a birth certificate.
3. Find out in ZAGS where you should apply for the baby's Russian citizenship. They will need a form from you stating that you don't have any objections to the baby being a Russian citizen.
4. Apply for the baby's Russian passport or have her name included into your wife's passport.
5. Get a certified copy of the baby's birth certificate and take it to the British embassy along with other papers they might need to get her British passport.

Good luck with everything.

Just had call from Liuda. She called moscow passport control and they had no problems with baby going through as long as she was on a passport so no visa needed as she will be on her mums passport.
