But I dont understand why contacting her is such a problem. You keep saying that, if you are not home with Skype, it will cost over $3 a minute. So, you cannot contact her. That's rubbish Like I said earlier. Get a calling card. I was in Highpoint a few months ago and I got a really cheap calling card from a run down clothes shop! I was able to call my fianc? at ANY time for 10¢ a minute from a call box using a 1-800 prefix number. Calling Ukraine will be a little more, but still cheap in comparison. Other RMP members, in the US can give you better info on this. |

What company has the best calling card rate to the Ukraine. Do you have a link I can go to. And GTR , arent you close to taking your trip also. I'm sorry I havent been keeping up to date on what your schedule is. If I am correct you are going any day now> |

Yes my trip is less then 3 weeks away. I leave April 20th and return May 7th. No expectations with this one, just a good feeling. |

Don't be nervous, think of it as a vacation. The first meeting is just that, you don't know what will happen, you don't have any control over it, so why worry? Think of it as an adventure few people taken. I know when I tell people I've been to Russia twice and I'm going to Moldova and the Ukraine, people look at me like I'm an alien and have a bunch of questions. Have you guys ever read a street sign there. I remember they have about 12 letters in the name and I have no idea what it says. So I guess I will have to rely on my internal compass while walking the streets there alone. I will tell you that I am excited and nervous at the same time. The good thing is , I have all ready been to Odessa and I am a little familiar with some places I went to all ready. A week from today is Easter Sunday in Odessa and I will be walking with her as it will be my 2nd day there. |

Now my DVD player is ancient and it wont play dodgy DVDs and only plays region 2, So, I cant understand why it's playing these! Also, I bought a hand held DVD player, which I took with me to Russia. I connected it to the TV in the apartment. It played region 2 and 5 fine, and we were able to watch them on the big TV. Perhaps thats the way to go. You can pick them up for under £40 on ebay. |

I have a question for you guys on the forum. I will have my cell phone with me in Odessa and my Odessa women suggested I buy a sim card in Odessa and install it in my phone so I can call when I am there and not ring up a astronomical bill. She said it costs $10 for a sim card and I will probably get 100 or 200 minutes on the cell. You guys have any suggestions about the sim card. I seem to think it's a good deal. The only thing that I see being a problem is that a new sim card will give me a Ukraine number and if any one from the U S wants to contact me they won't be able to get to me. They won't my temporary Odessa phone number. I know I have free local calls in the apartment I'm renting. What do yo guys think of the SIM card for the cell idea? |

I don't think the sim card changes your number. You will be charged the overseas rate no matter what sim card you use. The person calling will also be charged overseas rates. The best thing to do is turn your phone off and use the Ukraine sim card for calling within the Ukraine. Your phone also has to have the "international roaming" enabled, some call it unlocking the phone, before it will work with a foreign sim card. Contact your cell phone provider to enable the international roaming. They can also tell you if the the phone is for international use. I don't use sim cards from foreign countries, I only use SMS. Good luck.

I then bought a Beeline sim card. The weird thing was that everthing in my phone started working in Russian! It cost just over 20 rubles a minute to 'phone home'. A bit better than the £1.80 (90 rubles) a minute, for calling abroad using my normal sim card. Worse than that, my normal service provider charges £1.80 a minute to call locally in Russia. What a rip-off!!! So, if you have an unlocked cell phone, no problem. If it's locked, they'll unlock it. Again no problem. ps It needs to be a GM phone (anything newer than two years). Easy, I reckon the DVD's I bought (which were about $5 each), weren't genuine. Although they look it. And though the box says region 5, they probably have had the code taken out, so that they play anywhere. |

RP if you phone is a TriBand phone it will be fine for Int roaming. |

Having turned him down, the assistant, without a note of irony in his voice, proceeded to try and get him to buy insurance! It was awful to watch. However, things may now change. A young lawyer here (who paid over £2000 in charges, as a student), is taking on National Westminster Bank, in court, claiming they overcharged him. Believe it or not, this has NEVER been tested in a British Court. The bank has tried to settle the case and offered him money, but he's not having it. Up to now, banks have always given in and paid up. Because, they know that, if they go to court and lose, the bill from from all the customers they've skanked over the years would be astronomical. |

They even said to go spend $100.00 U S on things such as clothes and any thing I need and they will reimburse me at a LOT AIR COUNTER when I present the receipt. So I went out today by myself and went in the mall and got a pair of jeans, 6 pairs of socks and 5 pairs of underwear and 2 shirts. A little over 125.00 but thats O K > Any way I have to say that I am very happy that me & Elena went to dinner tonight and she arrived at my apt around 6 39 PM and she looked incredible. She is such a nice women. She is an absolute doll and as of tonight she started walking in the street holding my arm. That made my day. I really hope everything works out with her. I have noticed in myself that everyday that goes by I get more attached to her and I really feel in my gut that she is a true gem. Dinner tonight was quite romantic with holding hands at the dinner table to looking in each other's eyes. I really felt such a true warmth from her being. I can tell she is truly a person that cares about people and has a sensitivity to mankind. Yes, everyday I am getting closer to her and the comfort level is just like we have been together for years. Tonight I was looking at her and thinking that I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE HER in 6 days. I have a feeling I am not gonna like leaving her. And at he same time my mind plays with me and says Dont get so hooked and beware that anything could change when you leave. Maybe she will say that she enjoyed our time together but she doesn't think it will work out between us. I know I think of those things because of my last trip here and remembering that anything can change in a second. But I'm really giving the real me to her . I'm so relaxed with her that I am being the real me. We laugh as much in person as we did when we spoke on the phone for 4 months. She also said she was very comfortable with me being with her and she likes it . What a great mother she would be also. It's so obvious. I sometimes think , is this really happening that this women is this wonderfull. Everytime I pay a bill at a restaurant she starts opening up her wallet to give me money. Kind of unheard of here in the Ukraine, isn't it. She has to work tomorrow so she left a little earlier tonight. Actually around 9 30 pm. she called me when she got home and we said good night and talked for a minute. So just finished day #4. Tomorrow is day 5. SO FAR SO GOOD! |

A third took place in Odessa, Ukraine which suggests that violence marking HitlerÕs birthday is spreading and that UkraineÕs skinheads, not as numerous as their Russian comrades, are becoming more dangerous. |

Geez RP...It IS strange about the phonecalls! And such a coincidence that she had to go home early. Maybe you should ask her if you are the only guy that she's been talking to. I don't think it's wrong to ask something like that at this point. You did after all go there to meet her...etc. And it's something that you need to know in order to be able to continue (or not) with this relationship. Everything needs to be out in the open now, no more guessing games. I hope my advice helps! Good luck!!! |
