Russian Citizenship for Son, good or bad

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK, here's the thing. Wife wants to get Russian citizenship for our son.
So, we phoned the Russian Embassey in Dublin and got some information. Like Birth Cert. and price €506 ($654). Which is a bit much for a country where the population is in crisis.
Other than being entitled to a Russian Passport, does anyone know what else is expected of him, like national service etc, even if he lives in another country.

From what I know if he uses his Russian pasport to enter Russia he will not be entitled to any assistence if he needs it from your own Embassy. Also if he is of Consciption age they can force him to serve his time in the military.I would always make sure that if he returns to Russia to use his passport from your country. The Australian Government warn people here travelling back to the FSU country they came from to always travel on their Australian passport as they will will be entitled to help from the Australian Authorities in case something happens.

This is correct, but if he has a russian passport, he will not be able to enter Russia on his Irish passoirt, Russia will not give him a visa, he must enter the country on his Russian passport.

You are also correct that the Irish embassy will not be able to intervene or assist should he need it, if he enters on a Russian passport.

Don't worry about millitary service. If a young Russian man permanently lives outside of Russia, he is exempt from the service.

Also, 2 passports is always handy! Bank accounts, non resident alien etc? need I say more? "Tourists" are always treated better than locals.

When we have a sprogg, it is on my high priority list to see if we can get him/her one. What harm can it do?

No visa required to Russia........

The sprogg will thank you in later years when he has his Panama offshore IBC company with him as non EU passport toting director which will be tax exempt in Eire!

Well we're back from the embassey in Dublin and have all the paperwork for his Russian Passport. Of course it's all in Russian so I have a bit of translation to go through.
One thing they require form me is a letter giving permission for them to give him a Dual Citizenship.

I will add more later........

I guess your wife has Russian citizenship...
It is quite normal for her son to have duel citizenship.

Both me and my daughter have dual citizenship though it is expensive.
But we don't want to stick to Britain only, it is boring.......

Well we did all the paperwork and he got his name added to my wife's passport, he also has his own Irish Passport. So no problems for him.

Does anyone know if they have changed the Law about Spouses getting citizenship? I know up to a couple of years ago you could but then they changed the Law. They would give me Russian Citizenship if I surrenderd my Irish Citizenship and I was not going to do that.

It would be handy to have the two passports and no need for Visas every time we travel back to Russia.
