Not to sound stupid, but I don't own a DVD player, and have no clue what they are about. My lady friend in Mariupol wanted me to bring some DVDs.

The question I want to ask is about DVDs in the FSU.......can US-made DVDs play on Russian players, or is it the same situation as the VHS vs. PAL which uses the same media, but in different formats?

US - NSTC format, Rest of world - PAL format. You need to have a player that plays both or one that does PAL alone. PAL players can be purchased from europe/aussie/asia on ebay relatively cheaply.
