Help in Moscow?

Hi all

My fiance and me hope to get married this Christmas. To do this, my papers must be legalized in Russia. Here we have a small time problem.

After this weekend (Monday, the 1st of December) or soon after my papers are done at the Danish Embassy.

So what I need:
1. Somebody to pick-up the letter at the Embassy
2. Transport it to MID
3. Pay for it (there is money in the letter)
4. Pick up the letter a week later, or so and mail it.

Does anyone know a company who does this (forget about the major companies like DHL, TNT) they don't because money is involved. Or have a contact, who can help me.

Thanks for any advice.
Brian

Hi Brian,

There's an American Man (Rick Moncher) who lives in Moscow and rents apartments to people visiting Moscow. People have had excellent service from him. Maybe he can help you with the paperwork?

I found this email address for him on the internet:

rick.moncher@digitalrevolution.net

I hope he can help! Good luck!

FYI guys,

I am renting an apartment from Rick in December. This guy seems to be the "real deal". http://www.enjoymoscow.com/MoscowRick/default.asp

Also Paul Voytinsky (www.unclepasha.com) can help you with anything you need in Moscow. And this guy is a real character.

I woundn't stay at a flat for security reasons. And even the metro can be dangerous.

At least at the hotel they have security.

There is in fact more security at a hotel than a rented apartment. But let me play devil's advocate here, because my take is that if you stay in a hotel you are staying in Moscow like a tourist. But if you stay in an apartment, you are staying in Moscow like a resident.

If the apartment is in a bad building where all the residents get terrorized with crime, you'd be a fool to stay there. But if the building and the neighborhood is relatively safe and nice, then the only variable is YOU. You look like a rich American? Then you are an easy mark in the apartment, in the metro, in a cab, and especially walking the streets. If you reasonably blend in, then you can live like the locals do.

I know lots of people who go to foreign countries, stay in western hotels, eat at Mc Donald's there, and basically have a vacation where the only variable is the weather. Me? I'd rather have a place where I can cook somebody dinner, or vice versa, if I want to. I like mingling with the residents, being in their neighborhoods, and getting a real taste of what their life is like.

In a Moscow apartment, if you see a gorgeous lady in the hall, she just might come over for Kvas, Blini and stimulating conversation. In a Moscow hotel, the gorgeous ladies there will definitely come back to your room for stimulating conversation: for $50 USD per hour! ;-)

That's the beauty of it all! Different people, different opinions, different ways of doing things...that's why this board rocks!

CS brings up some good points in his post. There is stigma attached to a hotel, that many 'good' women will not visit a man there. Even if the both of you are registered together, many times security will give the woman a hard time, if not accompanied by you. This is because the security only allows the professional women who pay their 'fee' access to the guest rooms.

Another valid point he brought up is the purpose of your trip. If it your first trip, and you plan on meeting several women (or are traveling to several places in the FSU), a hotel is certainly more convenient. But if you are traveling to learn if the particular woman you've met is really someone you want to spend your life with, you will learn very little being in tourist mode. You will learn much more if you "play house" together, even if she goes home at the end of each night.

My fiancée and I have done both. We have gone on vacation together, and we have lived as a family together with her son. I can assure you, it is much more enjoyable and insightful to live as a family. Negotiating the busses and trolleys, shopping for groceries, walking her son to and from Kindergarten and stopping so he can play on the swings, etc. The time you have to learn and make an important decision is so limited; you need to make the most of it.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA AH

oh my dear GODDDDDD you killed me right here

I swear I was gonna jump out my skin))))))))

Unsecurity of a Russian flat is legendary, people write books about it, don't they? Like "Survival of the Fittest: A Night in a Russian Apartment"

or those bestsellers "No Metro Unless You're A Commando" and "Millions of Deaths in Moscow Metro: Underground Massacre")))))))))))

Comments like that will represent you to Russians as a highly prejudiced snub. I'm sure that you're a decent man, Emetsky, but I'd advise you to avoid sharing those types of thoughts with any Russian that you may meet. They might think bad about you.

P.S. I know Im harsh, but that comment str8 killed me. Peace.

Sobered up a bit, huh Andrei?

Some people see danger around every corner. Others wander blindlessly into any situation, unaware of any danger. Fortunately, most of the world falls somewhere in between these two extremes.

There are dangers to be found everywhere in the world. Knowledge, awareness of your surroundings, and a little common sense will usually keep a person alive for at least another day.
