Christmas in January???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I will be arriving in Belarus on Janusry 2nd. I have been told that many celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January.
How do most Russians celebrate Christmas?? What kind of ideas for gift giving? If you go to a families home, do you bring wine, flowers, ??

Thanks for the input.

Christmas is not a big holliday celebration in Russia, we just usually come together with all family and have a nice dinner and spend time together. It will be very nice to bring red wine with chocolate, flowers are always wonderful for women, but it is not very typical on this day. If you want to give some gifts to a girl, or her mom, this can be little cologn with the name of the saint that shares their name (you can buy them in any church), or something like this.

In Russia January 7 is Orthodoxy Christmas.

Wish you a very Merry Christmas and a safe trip.

Hey Chippie, i am told that the celebration is for the New year. They call it a New years tree and my Nat was out buying New Years gifts yesterday. The Orthodox Holidays are more along the traditional family meals and get togethers. Just take a few gifts for the close family. Women are the same over there they love chocolates, flowers, perfume ect ect. Dont make your gifts too expensive as this may cause some embarassment. A nice bottle of wine or 2 will go down very well....it is contributing to the meal and make you feel part of it. Have a great time...i am over in Dec/Jan myself

Yes Gonlaz that's right. She has been here for about 2 1/2 months. The Mr. is a great guy and very helpful. He knows the visa process better then anyone I know. The Mrs. is a very sweet woman and I've had the pleasure of talking to her 4 or 5 times. The Mrs. and my Mrs. (Lana) have e-mailed each other and we hope to hook up with each other in the furture.

Take care Gonlaz and Happy Holidays!!!
