This weekend, November 18-19, will be the telethon fundraiser for Hellenicares, the Greek charitable organization. Most of their efforts are concentrating on bringing medical equipment into former Soviet countries, where there are communities of Greek people living there.

Although the facilities were originally intended to help Greek people outside their own counrty, the medical care is actually available to people of ALL ethnic backgrounds in these areas. As a result, the Ukrainian government has given Hellenicares high commendations for helping people, for its work at its main hospital in Mariupol. Many thousands of patients have gone in for treatment of cancer and other serious diseases, at no cost to the patient or government.

A recent activity of Hellenicares is to bring food and medical supplies to areas of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, where there are shortages.

Telethon will be on the Greek sattelite channel "E.R.T.", for those of you who have multi-channel dishes.

Also, one thing Hellenicare is doing with the doctors, is to subsidize it and pay them better than the standard doctor's salary. This is to get doctors to stick to practicing medicine, and not moonlighting with a second job--i.e.
cab driver, bartender, etc.

An added bonus to this, with doctors strictly practicing medicine, the other jobs will be available to other people.
