TOSSING COINS???

When in Moscow outside red square there is a directional plaque in the paving. I have been told this is the geographical centre of Moscow. While there i paticipated in a custom of throwing coins over the shoulder while standing in the centre. The Babuskas would clammer and fight for the coins. 2 Questions . What is the significance of the coin throwing? And are there any rules for the collection of the coins? There seemed to be some sort of orgainised chaos going on. Anyone know???

I dont' know about that, but it is really, really slippery in the winter!!!!
