Hello everyone,
This is Hunter5568, my name is Sean. I am having alittle bit of a problem and was wondering if someone could give me some advice. I met a russian woman, She responded to me. wWe have been emailing each other between 1 and 2 months now. Just recently she asked me for some money towards her coming over here to me in the U.S. I checked my self to see how much this would cost, she asked me for $ 500.00 dollars. I am probably stupid, but i really thought she is sensere, and wired the money to her. She recieved the money and said she was very grateful. Now just today, 10/09/06 she tells me that she didnt know but she needs money to show the airlines for what she calls solvency, in the amount of $ 2,700.00. I dont know if she is being honest or not, but it seems as thow the travel agent would have told her this from the begining. Does anyone have any suggestions for me, they would be greatly apreciated. thanks,
Sean

I am very sorry hunter but you have been scammed. Email her?him and just tell them scam over and count your losses. It is a pity you didnt come on here or some other site and read up about scammers earlier. Hey mate we have all had them so dont be too embarrassed. There are threads on here and you can see other peoples experiences and learn from them. Welcome to RPM Sean.

sean,

chalk it up as an expensive lesson. you lost 500 dollars. don't lose another nickel. this is a scam and you've fallen for it, unfortunately.

think about it. what woman would fly alone to a foreign country to be alone with a man she has never met? it just doesn't happen. the line about solvency is a typical scam. there is no such thing.

think of the money you didn't send and try not to feel too badly. the #1 rule around here is never, ever send money to a person you have never met.

welcome and better luck in the future.

As others have said... you were scammed... sorry.

I do not know if you can pursue this as a crime... I think some here have and had results... she (or he) stole from you... it is a fraud...

Hi Sean.

Well the verdict is correct you have been taken for a ride. Sorry mate, dont take it to hard many have been taken but for a lot more than you. Don't lose heart though if you are interested in ladies from Russia/Eastern Europe keep looking and you will find a keeper.

Look around the RMP and read the info contained herein.

Last but not least by any sense of anyones imagination (yes it has already been pointed out but the point can never be flogged to death) Don't ever send any money to someone you have never met in person.

Cheers mate and welcome to the RMP.

I dont remember where i read it but there was a guy in oz that got scammed for $600. Out of frustrtion he wrote a letter to Mr Putin amongst many others saying how he liked the Russian people and that these scammers were giving the Russians a bad name. Low and behold Putin put a task force on to it and caught the scammers. They had scammed to the tune of 20 odd million dollars. Dont be disheartend just be more cautious, and read the scams and you wil quickly learn. There are very lovely honest women out there, and they are real keepers.

Pursue it as a crime? Please. This isn't the West we are talking about. Sergey got to do what Sergey got to do. He needs to update his murse. If you think it was a female collecting the money you are probably way off. The female is lucky to collect anything. The town that I spend a great deal of time in is filled with 20 something guys who drive around in luxury suvs/cars and favor track suits over business suits.

I am telling you, before you fall in love via the Net you should learn some Russian and catch a flight (many countries don't even require a visa these days). You won't be sorry. No need to pay anyone anything before you go. I think it is good for your soul to venture outside of your comfort zone every now and then. Makes you feel alive.

If you are a decent guy (or not) and can speak a bit of Russian you should have no problem finding plenty of very beautiful girls who will be interested in you. As long as you avoid the murse, track suit, shaved head, or pointy dress shoes she will find you to be rather refreshing. The hardest part is learning a bit of Russian and the jet lag. Oh yeah, please don't be like the hopeless Brits who go to Riga and confuse a prostitute with a normal girl. I have heard that story one too many times.

P.S. I must admit to being a proud murse owner. Those things are amazing. Place for my keys, wallet, contact drops, documents, change, phone, notepad, and pen. Every man should look into getting one.

Best of luck to all and don't underestimate yourselves. Put some effort into learning the language and studying the modern culture. This is a fascinating and exciting part of the world. Beats the hell out of football and BBQs.

Does murse = Mercedes Benz?

Why not pursue it as a crime if you have the time and inclination to do so why no? It has worked for a few Aussie guys and I am sure it has worked for others as well.

You say it isn't the west yet Russia and the Ukraine etc are taking on western ideas and ideals and as you say they are modern, so Sergie needs to learn what Sergie needs to learn. If you annoy enough people one of them will eventually do something about you and your behaviour.

And there is nothing wrong with trackies, sometimes they are a lot warmer and more comfortabe than anything else on the middle of a Russian winter, they are also good stuff in a Aussie winter to.

Before commiting to any individual too seriously in the future one might be well informed to visit one of these forums on a regular basis...

http://www.anti-scam.org/new-scammers.html

So you are not separated from your cash, sooner than you wish to be...

Fortunate for me I have found a select few ladies on these sites, before the "money letter" arrived in my "inbox"

The wise man is always informed from the getgo, sure a fella may be swayed by the "bogus LOVE letter"... Remember this... If it seems too good to be true, then it usually is...

Sorry, but you are totally clueless. Russia/Ukraine/Latvia/Lithuania etc. are still mafia states. Corruption is the norm. Violence is normal. Being a businessman is dangerous. I spend more time in that part of the world than you ever will. I should know.

Don't get me wrong, I love these places. However, there are major issues that will not be resolved until the corruption ends. Even the vast majority of politicians in these places would agree with me. Pretty much everyone and everything is for sale.

Your lack of understanding of this part of the world is demonstrated when you do not even know what a murse is. A murse is a little purse that men carry. It seems that thugs really like them. Most people laugh the first time they see some thug walking down the street with his little purse.

Yes, run to the police. Obviously you have never been to Russia. Anyone who has knows about the "ID" checks you get (less common in Ukraine). Before you ever go I would recommend that you understand that you are not visiting Italy or France. Most businesses hire private security firms. Why? For one, they need someone to protect them from the cops.

BTW, don't get Sergey mad. Sergey could take care of you in a second.

Try here (but bring your sense of humor):

this got off topic, but i'd guess the murse is similar to the "bro" or the "manzierre."

No need to be sorry but it was a genuine question, you see in this part of the world we give mercedes a name that is similar and guys dont have purses.

Dont read into what I type anything but what I type, I NEVER mentioned police. Your lack of knowledge of pursuing crimes is amazing, you DONT actually need police to do it in any country.

We are all well aware of hw Sergie can get you in a second, you think Russia's Mafia is bad, try dealing with international Mafia mobs, Triads etc. These people can still be 'got back at' you just have to have the gumption to do it! Some Aussies have as has already been pointed out, seems as though we are the only ones willing to try and do something about people who are to big for their boots.
