Since the Russians came and blasted us away with an all ale Shakespeare show "Twelth Night" 2 years ago, the Russians have been a popular visitor to our "Dublin Theatre Festival"

Off to see The Vacationers tonight

by Maxim Gorky
Directed by Evgeny Marchelli
Set Designed by Vladimir Boyer
Costumes Designed by Fagilia Selskaya
Music by Igor Esipovich

Winner of numerous awards at the Golden Mask Festival (including Best Performance and Best Director) and the Kontakt Festival 2006 (including Best Actress), The Vacationers by the prestigious Omsk State Drama Theatre promises audiences a night of theatre that they’ll never forget!

Based on sexual relationships, The Vacationers (better known as Gorky's Summer Folk) offers an unprecedented level of physical comedy, innovation and humour. It is a masterful work by one of Russia’s most famous playwrights with performances of beguiling freshness and detail. A theatrical triumph by one of the world’s most imaginative theatre ensembles.

This production is utterly spellbinding, with audiences amazed by the unique world they create. The Vacationers emerges as a "transfixing piece of theatre, uniting comedy, satire and political diatribe in a post-Chekhovian swoop of politically motivated energy" (Evening Standard).

A diverse group of Russians meet, as they do every year, at their summer holiday retreats. Relationships break under the strain, and scandals of business and infidelity are laid bare. These vignettes of personal despair and political activity give way to the 'vacationers' at play. There is much idleness and languor, a great deal of drinking, love affairs come to the boil, and violent arguments break out in this richly detailed play with visually
ravishing scenes.

Collaborating with the most prominent directors, artists, actors and set designers from both Russia and abroad, the Omsk State Drama Theatre is one of the greatest ensembles in Russia. Two-time winner of the Stanislavski Award, the company has toured the world to rave reviews.

Performed in Russian with English surtitles.

Looking forward...
