Renting a flat (apartment)

Apart from the rent, what do you have to pay for when you rent a flat in Russia?

Heat, Water, Gas, Electric, telephone, a property tax(es)?

Does this change if you own the property?

And is it true that the waste water pipes are too small for washing machines? (They clog very easily).

Bingism - you are out on station - what is your response?

The place I rented in Ukraine was all inclusive, as far as my rent went. It included local calls. The person for the electricity turned up during my stay and handed over the bill, and seemed to expect to be paid but soon realised that he had no chance and I guess decided he was going to have to come back. I passed on the bill to the owner and she was worried that I had paid it!
So, I would say no, as a renter you are all done and dusted. As an owner.. no idea.
Sam.

Thanks Sam. That is the impression I have. Ownership makes you legally responsible.

I will also agree. Everytime I rented an apartment the only thing I was responsible for was if I made any long distance calls. 1 tried to make us pay for electricity but my wife set her strait real quick!

Yes, I really do like the apartments better. Feels more like home, and costs less. One thing I did notice, is that St. Petersburg apartments are going down in price, while Kiev is going up, as of late.

Additionally, some of the hotels in Odessa(from what I've heard) have cut some deals with some of the local hookers. What has happened is that these particular hotels will pass on the list of room numbers that have single men, or pairs of single men, and then try to solicit business at 3am, with the hotel getting a percentage of the take.

So, that's another advantage with apartments---not having any unwanted solicitation when you are trying to sleep.
