Hi folks. Please help out a newbie here. I want to be able to send money to my GF parents who live in Sumy, Ukraine. She will be coming to live with me early next month. It is just too expensive to send money by Western Union on a regular basis so I was thinking about a credit/debit card. Has anyone used this system for Sumy? What is better Visa or Mastercard? Fees? What about ATM card? Will that work also? Any help will be very much appreciated. Any advise will also be appreciated.

Ikobo -- visa electron card that you reload through the web. Works pretty well.

Wal mart offers a low cost money sending service.
does atc stand for air traffic controller?

I started a account at my credit union and sent the debit card to my son in law to send money for birtdays emergency's ect. Make sure that no overdrafts are available.Send the pin number via email or in a seperate letter via snail mail. Much cheaper than Western Union and you still control how much $$$$ is available. And if things don't work out then you close the account.

edit,,,
Whoops forgot to mention that they can then get the funds at any 'bankomat' (ATM)

Yes Joe it does. I am retired AF and also did a couple of years in Afghanistan and Uzbek under the AFCAP program. I met my UW when I was on vacation after we had been writing each other for 5 months.

Thanks for all the replies. They are very helpful. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in taking money out of "bankomat" in Ukraine...especially Sumy. What is better? Visa or MC? TIA

Both Visa and Mastercard are available at every machine I've seen. American Express wasn't IIRC. The machines are multi lingual so even I could use them!
