I am considering a trip to the city of Stavropol, “city of the cross” in the central Caucasus region of Russia, possibly just after the New Year. I am concerned about the state departments warning regarding travel in the Caucasus region of Russia, listed as dangerous. The Department of State recommends Americans not travel to Chechnya and adjoining areas, and if they are there, to depart immediately. Anyone care to help me placate my conscience. I would like to meet her mother, her daughter and close friends. I believe the experience would be invaluable to our relationship, and especially to my understanding.
I wonder what the best approach to this destination would be, i.e. connecting flights to my final destination.

Hi

I was looking at the map, to se the precise location of the city. If you dress like Russian, I would say no problems as long you are with your lady and her family.

There are several reasons for this:
1/ To my knowledge the conclict are limited to the mountains in Chechnya, at the edge and south of Grozny.
2/ In this region there several popular tourist sites, like the rich Sochi. However at some distance from Checnya
3/ Russia has a popular site called Mineral Voda much closer the the conflict area
4/ In bird-line is there more than 100 miles to the border of Chechnya

I dont know if you fly to Stavropol, but you can fly to Krasnodar 100 miles away. Let your lady meet there. When you are in public(as little as possible) , keep your mouth shut or low as posible.

About flights: many domestic airlines are NOT registeret, so you can search at home for a connection. You have to ask your lady, to se if there is airport in the city and if yes, from where the planes fly.

That you are aware of the situation is a credit to you, and sure you will behave accordingly to that.
