Yes American football, with an egg shaped ball. Every game starts with a "kickoff". This is where a player kicks the ball with his foot to the other team. There are also punts, quick kicks, extra points, field goals, and the "holy roller" which is now illegal. There are many plays where a player uses his foot. I know you're just giving me a hard time. Maybe I should make a call to a friend of mine who will give you a talking to!!!

How's life Chris? Any trips planned in the near future?

Posted by: skinsfan

GTR...as "SKINSFAN" technically, everytime i post, i am bringing up the thought of football......GTR, i think you should explain to Chris that his football is the choice of many American mothers (Soccer MOMS) who don't want their little darlings being hurt by the more manly -man sport of American Football ...... European football is better suited for garden parties and afternoon tea..........hehehehehe !!

He!!He!! or you could always have Aussie football where we dont wear any padding or helmets.

I agree skins....football is played by a lot of overpaid prima donna's, ......now what about a mans sport!! ...... Rugby....no pads, no protection not like American Football where they take about 4 hours to get padded up before they go out to play, you know just in case they fall over and graze their knees when they are playing .....

Lana comes home from the hospital on Friday, which is her tomorrow. She is ready to leave. She is a 6 hour train ride from her city so she misses her son, friends, and family. Thanks for asking and good luck to you.

Posted by: waiting123

Glad to see Lana is finally going home to spend time with her family and friends.

How are you hanging in there.

October is not far away!!! I put up a thread that might help you out... did you read it?

Yes she will feel a lot better once she gets home. She misses everyone she sees on a daily basis.

I just read the new thread. I will ask a question there.

Thanks - waiting.

Chris....you are right about Rugby, i played in college (a frat thing), nobody really understood the rules....but we all understood the beer at the end of the match !! it is a rough sport, blood flowed as freely as the beer......

Posted by: skinsfan

GTR...i hate preseason...but, it is football, and every team goes through the same thing...people get hurt, but hopefully not too seriously.......

i agree that there are some bad apples in the NFL, but i think the NBA holds the lead on idiots...that being said, there is really no room in sports for criminals.....whether these athletes like it or not, they are looked up to by children, and these children will duplicate what they see on the playground....i speak not only about the young chldren, but also "adult" children.....(parents)......

You said a mouthful there Skinsfan. Every sport has it's bad guys but they always get away with it and come out smelling like roses ... and bigger saleries ever year. Why change if they only get their hand slapped?

I answered your question...
Why change if they only get their hand slapped?
That is the problem GTR and Waiting if there is no discipline that actually affects them personally rather than a meagre fine or two that is peanuts for them anyway, then they can run amok!!

That is one of the problems football has here, they earn so much that a few fines here and there mean nothing to them, on the other hand in Rugby they have none of these problems with either the fans or the players, they respect the referees and other players etc and dare not risk a breach of discipline, the rules or even act out of turn away from the game, the game and it's governing bodies really crack down on them if they do!!

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Well the NFL kickoff game was last night. Charlie Batch (ex-Detroit Lion QB) didn't do too bad of a job but Culpepper really stunk up the place. Culpepper's back up is Joey Harrington (another ex - Lion QB). Of course the Detroit Lion defensive line coach was arrested this week for driving a car in the nude!!! Reports say alcohol was involved ... DUH!!!

Posted by: skinsfan

yes, it was great to see real football again.....but you also have the Tigers that are doing so well this season......it will be interesting to see how the Lions will do....GTR you must always remember that my favorite team is anyone who plays the cowgirls.......

Posted by: GoingToRussia
GTR you must always remember that my favorite team is anyone who plays the cowgirls.......
I get your drift, I'm not a fan either.

The Tigers are fading fast. They will lose in the first round of the playoffs ... like the Redwings.

Hey skins i didnt realise you got Aussie rules over there ( real football ) he he

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Well I just got through watching Ohio State stomp Texas at Texas. They look like the team to beat but it is always tough to go undefeated in the Big Ten. I think the other teams in the Big Ten this year are a little lame. I don't think Michigan will beat Notre Dame Next week. Illinois and Indianan were beaten by MAC teams. I know the MAC is tough but come on!!! Iowa won in over time to a no name team.

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Looks like another heat breaking year for my Lions, lost with 3 seconds left in the game. The game was real exciting .... yeah right 9-6, 5 field goals.

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Well the Tigers are off to a bad start in the World Series!!! Maybe those 6 days of "rest" took the motivation away. They should win tonight with the veteran Rogers pitching.

Posted by: Pin Boy

really surprised how badly the tigers got beat last night. love baseball but these start times after 8 PM are ridiculous. MLB tries as hard as they can to turn you off from the game. i saw the chavez catch the other night but couldn't stay awake for the last two innings. another "sportscenter memory" for me, i guess. i'm a yankee fan and i never saw the brosious and jeter HRs in back to back games in '01. i refuse to be a zombie the next day at work cause i was up late watching baseball. so many kids are not fans cause they don't become attached to the game by seeing the pinnacle of the season. maybe out west they do, but i know in the east it's this way.

and how bout ND pullin' off that game yestersay. UCLA handed it to them by not aggressively rushing the QB like they did all day. they play that 3 man rush crap and give up 10-15 yard passes. any defensive coach who calls that should be executed on the 50 yard line right after they team blows the game

pb

I was in Russia during the Tigers wins against NY and the A's. This is the first post season game I got to watch, very diappointed.

My Lions sure do stink. They are playing right now but they are down 14 point slate in the 4th quarter. They got rid of their best quarterback this year and have a bunch of old and young wanna be's.

At least the Wolverines are looking good but I don't think they can beat Ohio State this year. I also was a bit upset with the UCLA/ND game.

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Hey Skinsfan ... congratulations on DC beating the Cowboys in OT!!! The Lions also won a game!!! YEE HA!!!

Yeah, right.....the problem is that Rugby League here is played by blokes who would spit out your gridiron fat-boys, and real football is played by men who don't need to bulk up on steroids to be competitive.

Anotehr comparison recently would be the Raider expelled for a knee to the groin, or the Brit rugby player cited for punching, but exonerated as he had been provoked by an elbow to his face. Now, which sport is for sissies?....

They are both brutal sports. There have been men die or paralysed for life on the football field. It is always a humbling occation.

a friend of mine (american) who served in the military told me this story. he was in australia and hanging out with some australian soldiers who took him to an australian rules football match. comversing with the aussies, he described american football and one aussie replied, "yeah we play that game. it's called smear the queer!"

I remember seeing an interview with one of the big US basketballers over here for a promotional tour...and they asked him had he seen any aussie rules. i think he was on about $15 million per year. He said " man those guys are crazy..they dont wear helmets or padding and they just hit each other from any direction....man you couldnt pay me enough do play that game" Ya gotta love em

Play Aussie rules for 20 years and you'll feel like 50 when you are only 30.
I wonder how Michael Voss feels? Probably like Greg Williams and will pay for it the rest of his life. I did not see him much in the International game v Ireland. I missed the second one where the Irish reckon we were thugs and don't want to play anymore. I think he was as slow as treacle as his knees have had it. I got smart, i gave up playing it regularly when i was 18 before there is enough time to wreck joints in body, especially knees and shoulders. Instead just play kick to kic in park with mates after goign to the footy. Still, fun but no stress on the body. Best game to play and watch but it's a killer on the body. A few broken bones from cricket no drama. They heal, knee tissue and ligaments all worn out from twisting and turning in footy at high speed. Enjoy hobbling around for rest of your life when you retire.

Well this weekend is the big college football game. Number 1 Ohio State versus number 2 Michigan. Who will win? I hate to say this but my money is on Ohio. The only way Michigan can win is turnovers or if Troy Smith get injured. Who is your money on?

Posted by: Pin Boy

i say michigan because their defensive front is brutal. i'm not sold on troy smith. also, my friends who have traveled to both stadiums all say too many of the fans at ohio state are jerks (they cheered when a penn state player was partially paralyzed) and the michigan crowd is not mean spirited and more welcoming to visiting fans.

pb

just hope it lives up to the hype

Posted by: GoingToRussia

I hope you're right! Michigan has the number 1 defense against the run butthat's not what I'm worried about. I wasn't a Troy Smith fan either until this year. He throws a better ball this year and doesn't run as often. An overall smarter player this year. Like I said, hope your right because the guy I'm watching it with is an Ohio State grad. I've known him since high school and we have had a lot of good times watching this game over the last few years!

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Well Michigan lost but I figured they would. They got 3 turn overs but that wasn't enough, they needed 1 more. They had their chances like over throwing Manningham down the sideline for a sure touchdown. So much for thier great run defense!

Posted by: GoingToRussia

It's Super Bowl weekend!!! Who's going to win? Everyone is picking the Colts and they probably will win but I have a feeling the Bears defense will have a great day!!! I think the Bears will win! It should be a good game!

As they say....

DA BEARS....

Can't say I am a fan of them... but I do think they will win... I think the Colts are overrated...

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Okay, I brought the pizza and the beer. Who's joining me for the SuperBowl and what team do you think will win? I think it will be a close game, unless 1 team has a lot of turn overs, and I pick the Bears.

GO BEARS!!!

Posted by: Pin Boy

got chicken nachos, homemade pizza, italian deli platter, fresh italian bread, cold beer and the colts in a close game early, but win going away by 14. no, make that 17.

Bears 1 Colts 1

me too. that's all i ask for. well a miracle too, since my pool numbers are terrible: 5 and 5, 5 and 1, and 8 and 5. UGH! we'll save you some food GTR!

GO BEARS, GO!

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Well it has been an interesting game. Either team could be well ahead but instead it is only a 2 points difference ... mmmm good food pb.

InLove votes for the Bears, that's Bears 2 and Colts 1.

I think the Colts have found a rythem, they sure are keeping the Bear offense off the field. The Bears offense looks bad, it doesn't look good for the home team.

Thanks for stopping by InLove, I hope you are correct with your pick.

Posted by: Pin Boy

colts win going away. here's the sports headline for tomorrow:

GROSS NEGLIGENCE!

you read it here first

pb

Posted by: Texas Proud

Well... I was wrong.... Da Bears got their butt whooped...

Posted by: inlove

Actually, I was suspicious that Bears are not going to win. It seemed too good to be true..
Honestly, with a quaterback like theirs, I'm surpirised they made it this far..
But I live in Chicago. Of course I was rooting for Bears.

Posted by: GoingToRussia

You can't win if you don't have any offense or a good defense that can't tackle.

Posted by: nflcolts

3 steak dinners, one case of beer and two hundred usd. Life is good! I always pick the colts.

Posted by: GoingToRussia

CONGRATS on your win! Did you go to the dome to celebrate?

i spent at least a hundred bucks on food and beer and lost another two hundred in betting pools, but all in all it's worth it. what am i gonna do, take it with me?

With the Super Bowl happening....this thought came to mind......I presume that Bill Belichik(head coach of the Patriots) has some kind of FSU connection, judging by the name......anyone know how/where??

Posted by: Pin Boy

i think the connection is that he has, as many many ukrainians i've encountered, no problem with lying!

Whoever gets elected as the next president of the USA should nominate Belichik to a cabinet post........head of the CIA

You could donate it to my Siberian Vacation fund, I do know of a Smokin Hot blonde that would apreciate it...LOL.

Posted by: Pin Boy

i could ditto my post from 2007 as it applies to my 2008 super bowl experience!

Posted by: Raspberry

There has been a longtime rivalry between the Cleveland Browns and the Pittburgh Steelers........anyone know WHY Browns fans refer to Pittsburgh as "Babushka Land"?

Posted by: Pin Boy

i think it may have to do with the large % of folks from places like poland and lithuania and such countries. PA is very ethnic oriented and people closely identify with the homelands of their grandparents and consider themselves to be irish, italian, polish, lithuanian, etc. mike dikta is from pittsburgh, dan marino, joe montanta, etc. they are like heros to the people of the same nationality.

hope that helps
