Are the blacklists worth checking?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just wondering if you folks think some of those blacklists are worth checking, or if it's pointless. So far, I've checked out 4 contacts on a couple of those lists, and while 3 of them for sure smell like scammers, I don't have enough "hard evidence" to go so far as to submit them to the blacklists. So, if I'm hesitating to blacklist a scammer (for what I feel is a good reason - innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt), maybe a lot of scammers simply never get reported?

The best way I have found to check is to look at the IP adress and also see if the header includes the words THE BAT!

The first person who contacted me I found on a blacklist. It wasn't that easy, she had several names, and several different photo's, looking very different in each photo shoot. I wonder if a pro isn't overlooked occasionally. I'm glad I checked the lists, for two reasons. I learned about scammers, and, I became interested in a woman from another country, funny how it all worked out.

well, of course a majority of scammers never gets reported.
reasons vary: men are ashamed; men move on; men don't know how.
As well, most scammers act behind fake, purchased or stolen pictures ( that's why you've singers and fashion models there ).

I'm sure many scammers never get reported. However, my real concern about the blacklists are women who are NOT scammers but who get reported by some unhappy guy whose affections were not returned or who misinterpreted the woman's intentions and immediately started screaming "scammer! scammer!" without any real basis for doing so.

I think it's fine to check the lists, but do so with a grain of salt and with the understanding that it is not always the woman's fault.

I found that the blacklists have some good information and you have to really read what is posted about a particular lady.

I had a lady who was identified as a scammer on a blacklist and I was just floored when I found her pictures everywhere and over six different names used.

I even discussed this in a e-mail with her and of course she denied everything. We still talked for over four months and then one day it just stopped. I don't know what happened, but probably a good thing when all is said and done.

Other posts are correct when they say that most people don't report scammers and maybe that's good or maybe it's bad.

I would rather report a possible lady that is a scammer and maybe save another person's heart from being hurt.

A scammer shared the same name of my wife, same name but different details.

At the moment it seems to be my role here to give advice on how to avoid being a total a$$ by offering examples from personal experience.

Until an alleged scammer ask me for money, I'm not going to report them.... Even if I have reason to believe that they intend on asking me for money. Until they make the bad play you have only a gut check. If your guts make you feel bad about the situation, then drop the communication and move on.

As for the original question. Yes, checking the anti-scam "black lists" is a good idea. Just take your results with a big grain of salt... Jill echoes an experience I had recently with a lady in Ukraine... Someone listed her as a scammer several times on different sites, AND she was writing me while on holiday and didn't tell me! Why would she? How could she know I can locate the computer she posted from to within 200km from the content of an email header? (!!)

I misread all of this and other patterns as scammer behavior and cut her off at the knees... I made a BIG error in judgement. Do not go there. A scammer will just vanish, but a real FSUW will give you a piece of her mind before she slams the door shut on your face...

WAIT until the pitch has been made before you start crying about a scammer! This is the only way you'll know for sure. Then you can string 'em up while you're at it. There will be no lingering questions, or REGRETS.

I am new here... what is "the BAT"?? And yes, I saw it in the header... I found a woman with ALMOST the identical name in the scam list here, but different photo, but I decided to look at her letters, and it had the EXACT 2 money letters... VERY dissappointing as we have been emailing for a couple months... I have not emailed her yet to let her know that I know... Any suggestions to dropping the hammer? I thought about sending her a pic of the girl with her name... lol Oh, and the IP addresses used in the emails are registered here in the usa, yahoo accounts...

Welcome Chris

If you do a search on here you will probably find a lot of information on this topic and also about 'the Bat.' As far as I know the Bat is a powerful email client for advanced users and it is generally considered way out of reach of normal FSU women. Therefore the ones that tend to use it can afford to use it for sending out emails in their hundreds and one way they finance this is by scamming money out of unsuspecting men from the West.

That is not to say there will be many using it for legitimate reasons, but a lot of the well known scammers have been found to be making use of it for the wrong reasons.

If you have found two letters that are an exact match from previous scams it is more than likely unfortunately you have been caught also, but at least you know now befeore it is too late. Try googling some more extracts from letters and her name, address etc.

Hope this helps
Chris

Yep!
Don't waste another key stroke on her unless you will get some wierd satisfaction from pointing out the truth to them.
Instead, just forget "him" (lol) and go find a worthy women of your time...

Sorry to disappont the scam hunters, but "the bat" is just an email client - no scam there :-)

We have "the bat" software on my wifes PC at her flat over there, just a normal piece of email sofware!

I too am new to this site. I just found out that the girl i was talking too was a scamer . Read the black lists. Google their letters. Thats how I found out. From the first to the latest letter were exact. minor changes, but the kicker was the father making fishing tackle. Glad to have found this site of information.

Welcome Ed!

It is good to hear you found out early and used some of the tools to help you find out, but what did you mean about 'father making fishing tackle' I don't understand that?

Welcome to the forum Ed! And FYI: Russians fish too.

Scammers check the blacklists too. The moment they are spotted they will change the photos or details and its a never ending thing. I think its more important to check up on how to spot them in the first place. Any info whether it be on here or another site is the way to go. When i first spotted my first scammer and she never asked for money by the way ( but it was coming) i just replied " SCAM OVER" and never heard from him/her again.

how does one go about finding a good blacklist site. I tried to report my scammer, but couldnt find a site that actually worked. clicked the links, typed my info and hit send... only for it not to work or email that the address in no longer valid. got tired of wasting my time and resource to report this scammer.

Hey NorCal67,

Welcome to RMP!!!! Where you from? I lived in Norcal, and moved to SoCal about 2 years ago. There will be a lot of posts to answer your question, but there was a site a while ago that someone mentioned. It was Russian Tea Room or something of that sort. Ill try to find it.
Keep up the search, it's worth it!!

I'm still a little slow when it comes to computers. How does one check an IP address?

Posted by: Jerico

To find an IP go to www.internetfrog.com and cut and paste the ip you get sent to the ip search on this site. HAvent used it in a while so maybe its not a good site anymore.
The emails will have an IP address so hopefully you no how to find it.
If you use yahoo it automatically leaves it out so you have to go into the email settings and change some things to see it the IP on the email , ussually the first ip address you see. Then copy and paste it into the frog program.
Hope this helps.

It all depends on your email client (program). Most are preset to the default "Header" which usually does not reveal the IP addy because it is included with a bunch of numbers and other info that have little meaning to most people. For example if you are using Yahoo mail, on your opening mail page upper right top there is an "Options" link. Click it and it will open to another Yahoo page for Mail Options.

In the Mail Options page under Management click the General Preferences link. It will open up to another page and more options. In the General preferences under "messages" you have an option for show "Brief Headers" or show "All Headers". Clicking the "All Headers" will give you all the details of the email. In these details will include the IP addys. There are web sites all over the net that can give you more information on specific IP addys. Just do a Google search on "IP search" and a hundred or more will show up. All of them providing pretty much the same info.

Most all email programs have these option features somewhere. Depending on your program you'll need to find where and select the "all header" or whatever verbiage is used.

Hope this helps. If your still confused pm me and I'll try to help you out more specifically.
