Question to group....Ring finger?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: so cal rick

I just received photos from my girl for my birthday.

She visited me in February, here in USA from Ekaterinberg, Russia, spent two weeks, and has returned.

I gave her a engagement ring while she was here, and told her to consider my request to be my wife.

she returned, and our communications has been very well indeed.
she most recently asked how "wife" visa was comming along.....

I replied that it was not... I had been waiting for answer to my question, of marriage proposal, .... We have been in contact since Sept. 2004

Anyway, for my birthday in (last) of June she sent various goodies, including photo disk of recent photos of her..... in photos she has diamond ring on right hand,..... I thought engagement ring was to be worn on left hand.

Could be photos were printed backwards , or maybe ...who knows.

She is away for ten days to sanitorium for health boost
When she returns I shall ask point blank whats with the ring on the right hand!

She is a straight woman, whom I love, and hasen't BS's me yet, don't think she is willing to do this.

So far all rings true..."cept"
ring business on nright hand in photos has me a bit scratchin me head.

Any you guys drink "Optimator" German beer?

Comments most welcome

Russians, Ukrainians, and many other East European Slavs wear wedding bands on the right hand. This was originally an Orthodox tradition, based on the supposition the right hand is closer to the heart.

However, I would also say to you (no offense intended) that if you are asking this question here, rather than to her directly, it appears you don't trust this woman with all your heart and soul. If that is the case, she may not be the one for you, nor you for her.

Boy Kathy...

A bit rough there aren't we??? (and this is from one that IS rough!!!)

Read his post... he said she was away for 10 days and plans to talk to her about it when she gets back.... does not seem like anything you say...

I in no way intended it to be rough. That's why I added the "no offense". Nuance is lost online.

However, even if rick's fiancee is away, what I drew from the post was a lack of trust or faith in the "why"?

Is it a lack of trust? A lack of confidence? Personally, I sensed in the post something beyond mere curiousity.

I think it is best to confront these uncomfortable questions in oneself before one marries. Personally, I believe that when you marry, you are taking someone's heart in your hand. You must cherish it at all costs, and you must respect this person's duality. These types of questions offer a glimpse into the depth of relations. Better to know the answer now than a year or two, or more, later.

Tatiana is away for ten days to Sanitorium....maybe to return Aug 7,
At that time I will ask about ring finger....look I'm new to all this.

Kathy,....of course I trust this woman....or I would not have asked for her hand in marriage!

Good "Gods" girl I am US Marine...1971...don't guess I'm anybodys fool.

But the ring finger thing had me scratchin my head....now since Kathy said that it was custom to wear on RH..as oposed to "our' LH

Well...that speakes volumes doesen't it!

Anyway when Tatiana returns from sanitorium I "will' ask....we have no secrets.

We are close.

This forum is fantastic isn't it?
Thanks all...So Cal rick

Rick,
FWIW I had Tanya were her engagement ring on her left hand as well as the wedding band. I just said that this is the way we do it. The local ZAGS chapel didn't have a problem with it either.

I must say AK Mike you have the right idea....
Having your Bride learn to master the .44 Mag. blackhawk.

I'm partial to .45 ACP myself.....gotta find out if Tatiana likes to shoot.

During her visit here, I opened the gun vault and she saw many "heaters"
And remarked that I must be quite the "Huntsman"

I declined to inform her that what was in the vault was "liberty teeth"

My fiance has said she might go to the shooting range with me because she needs a refresher course. She learned to handle firearms while in school in Russia.

Same here , Irina swaps her ring to the right hand when she goes home, nothing too much to worry about here!

this is a little overkill, but my wife and i each have wedding rings on both the left and right hand...that way we have everything covered....

Posted by: waiting123

My wife and I were married in Russia in Feb, we currently wear our rings on our right hands.

She has talked about having an American wedding on our 1st Anniversary and move the rings to our left hand... but to me it does not matter...

I love and respect my wife... people know I am married.

Good idea skins!!!! all bases are covered.

Rick the guys are right...right hand is the usual one for them, but it doesn't really matter as you rightly say, good to hear you have found someone you can marry and spend the rest of your life with.

My friend you love, Kiev, i love Ekaterinberg, i love Tatiana, Ahh life is grand when you love something.

I would love to travel away , and around Ekaterinberg, someday and just see what small townes, and villes exist around that area, bound to be most interesting.

I have envisioned spending a winter there one time to experience the full blast that mother nature has to offer, and to ride in horse drawn sleigh, and to celebrate the Christmas festivities in Russian Custom.

Oh, how I miss Tatiana, hurry back from sanatorium,
as the song goes....speed my love to me!

History of Egyptian wedding ring.

As chance has it, the oldest recorded exchange of wedding rings comes from ancient Egypt, about 4800 years ago.

In early Egypt, the ring was linked with the supernatural, a never-ending band linked with eternal love. For the Romans later, the ring's acceptance by a young lady was a binding, legal agreement and the girl was no longer free. Today we accept the ring as part of a religious ceremony when we marry in church.

Modern wedding traditions.

As time passes traditions change and, today, it is not only the brides who wear rings as a symbol of their lasting affection, but the majority of men also choose to wear this badge of fidelity and commitment.

The ring's band does not have to be gold. In early Roman times they used iron, for its symbolic strength. But that has been replaced in the third century with silver and gold because of its beauty while iron rusts. There are attractive alternatives for yellow gold, such as Silver or Electrum. You can also think about the hardness of the metal and the color of your wedding band.

Wear wedding ring left or right hand.

Most people wear the wedding band on the left hand. However, some European women wear the ring on their right hand. Some Scandinavian women wear three rings, one each for

• engagement

• marriage

• motherhood.

Jewish brides have the ring placed on their index finger, since that is the finger with which they point to the Torah as they read. Early

Wedding Thimbles.

Puritans refused to wear wedding rings because they considered jewelry frivolous, yet in Colonial times, couples exchanged "wedding thimbles" - a useful and practical gift, and therefore acceptable - but after the wedding they often cut off the bottoms thereby creating rings. Whatever the culture, whatever the century, people have recognized the importance of sealing their unions with rings.

But why the third finger of the left hand?

There are many theories as to why this particular finger came to symbolize marriage. Both the ancient Romans and Egyptians believed that a vein - called the vena amoris in Latin - ran directly from that finger to the heart.

In medieval England, a bridegroom would slide the ring part way up his bride's thumb, index and middle finger, saying "In the name of the father, the son, and the holy ghost" as he passed each one. He then put the ring on the next available finger - the third finger of the left hand. This practice was finally formalized in the 1500's when Henry VIII's son authored The Book of Common Prayer, which gives English modern Protestant wedding vows and decrees on which finger our wedding rings should go.

Do men wear wedding rings?

The practice of men wearing wedding rings is relatively new. Up until the middle of the twentieth century, it was mostly only women who wore wedding rings, perhaps a reminder of the days when women were regarded as property, or perhaps a harmless custom akin to women wearing engagement rings that their husbands do not. When World War Two broke out and many young men faced lengthy separations from their wives, men began wearing wedding bands as a symbol of their marriages and a reminder of their wives.

It was pure romance, a gesture of love and affection that has happily survived into modern times. The vast majority of men wear wedding bands these days.
