How do Russians feel about tattooing? Is it as common there as it is here?

Just curious.....

hopefully they have more sense than to treat their bodies like a brick wall in the middle of the bronx.

I second that PB......to be honest I cannot remember seeing anyone with any over there??

hmmm... I'm guessing PB doesn't like tattoos From what I've seen it's growing in fashion, but hasn't got anywhere near the popularity it has in the Wets (yet)....

Posted by: Pin Boy

here's what i posted in another thread:

assuming we all have tattoos??? no way on earth!!! disgusting, physical graffiti. YECH!! i have never seen a single tattoo that even remotely looked attractive. dull and bland each and everyone. good line i heard by model cindy crawford about tattoos: "i think i'd look pretty silly at 50 years old standing up at my daughter's wedding with a butterfly on my ankle."

as you can tell i have some pretty strong feelings on this subject. i rate this one right up there with smoking when i look at a woman. real tough to overlook. GAG!!

pb

Posted by: bingism

hehe.... to be honest I'm not a big fan, but there have been a few I've happened upon that were "interesting" at the time... LOL Personally I don't have one, primarily because i don't think I wanna look at it when its crinkly and faded, if you know what I mean...

I'm not a lover of them myself but it does help it they are spelt correctly hehe

Actually if you came to my university campus when the weather is hot, nearly every 2nd girl on the sidewalk has on shorty shorts or a miniskirt and a big ol' tattoo on her lower back or around her ankle. So I guess I assume its common at least with the younger crowd. I always liked them cause my dad had a cool one from his 'Nam days and well when I got mine, he couldn't say much.

I received a tatto when I was in Desert Storm... and my wife has seen it, and loves it... It is not a tacky tattoo... It is a bald eagle flying with the American Flag grasp in his claws.

My wife had no issues with it and she just always talk about how interesting it is to her... I asked her should I have it removed and she stated with no hesitation NO...

Tattoos are catching on in Russia.... they catch on to a lot of our past times. i.e. belly rings... it used to be every girl in America had a belly ring, now they are few and far between... but go to Russia and you see every woman with them...

A tattoo is fine...

Those back tats look hideous!

Sorry to be so old fashioned. But there are two absolute "deal breakers" for me:

1. fake boobs
2. tattoos

If you have either one, just walk on by.......

Well the tattoos may be a deal breaker for me but the fake boobs? Well I might be able to live with that

I agree about the back tattoos. I dont like them one bit. There called tramp stamps and most young girls get them to be in the crowd. Gives you something to look at when your..... well you get the point.
This was one of my reasons for going overseas for a wife.

I guess tacky is in the mind of the one making the comment.... I do not feel that my tattoo is tacky by any means nor has other people that has seen it...I have had many comments on how patriotic and symbolic it is. Seems kind of bold to make such a generalized statement that no matter what tattoo a person has it is tacky, I agree there are tacky tattoo's out there, but I have never said that a persons tattoo is tacky with out ever seeing it.

Maybe you do not like tattoos', then say so....don't say they are tacky, but to say that a patriotic mark that you have never seen, that I and some very very close friends received while serving in the military is tacky is to say that I/we are tacky people. I make the connection because the tattoo is a permanant sign on us, and the kind of tattoo that a person gets shows the personality you have. I take it with a little offensive that you describe my tattoo a tacky!!!!

There are many cultures and religions out there that believe deeply in the art of tattooing and some tribes believe it is a way to signify their rigt of passage, I guess their thousand old believe is considered tacky.

But like I said... to each their own.... I am sure there are things you have or do that people would consider tacky!!!

I was dating a lass about a year ago and she had a rose tatooed on her lower back.... Not a big tatoo or anything wierd...
For me, this was a big turn on! ( I asked her i it was a scratch and sniff?)
(as this is a forum, this was my feelings)
I liked the fact she had this tatoo, that is my thoughts on this post.....
Sam.

i have never had 1 & don't intend to ever get 1 but that is personal choice
i don't dislike them & have seen some very good artwork
some like them,some don't
just like a lot of other things in life or on this forum
opinion is a 2 edged sword

Posted by: sidney

I don't have and probably will never get. The worst are the self inflicted ones. I see it being more accepted in the FSU especially the big cities. My wife has a step bro in Moscow with but he was in prison as well as a drug user. I like the line- premanent proof of temporary insanity.

I have a couple of tattoo's, and while my girl was OK with them (but the moustache still has to go) she made me hide them from her mother. She said that her mother would think that I had been in prison or part of a religious cult

Posted by: Pin Boy

waiting,

you miss my point, or we disagree...to me it doesn't matter whether it's an eagle, the virgin mary, a deceased child's name, or the new york yankees logo, they are all tacky. ever time i see a tattoo on a person's body it looks to me like they forgot to wash.

did i say tacky people at any time? tacky is a matter of taste and that's the way i feel about tattoos. i don't make a distinction if you got the tattoo in a combat zone, on skid row, or in a fancy mall.

but the one on mike tyson's face looks good - NOT!

Thats funny... my wife's parents live in St. Peter and when I was visiting later on one of the days my wife pulled up my sleeve to show her parents.... and I was the one trying to hide my arm

I wonder if it has to do with the cities... i.e. I wonder if Moscow and Spb are more accepting and do not label people for tattoos (or think they were in prison) versus....I would say almost the rest of Russia.

Posted by: firemansam

On a chick (not being offensive),
the right tatoo, in the right place,
I feel is a great turn on!
Never given a thought to blokes tats..
I like some tats on women.. in the right places...

Posted by: Jill

I just wrote about this on your other thread....

It is getting more common among young people in Russia, so in Moscow, for example, it's not too uncommon to see guys (and some gals) in their 20s with tattoos. However, anyone over, say 30 who has a tattoo is often a former prisoner. Tattoos in Russia are traditionally associated with prison culture and they are not simply decorative, but are used to describe things about the wearer, such as what crimes he's committed, how long he's been in jail, his "rank" among prisoners, etc. There are actually tattoo "dictionaries" that have been published deciphering the language of Russian prison tattoos--and it is a language. So although tattoos are growing in popularity among young people, their former association was strictly with criminal culture.

Those tattos across a womans lower back just above the buttocks used to be unusual and "sexy."

Now, most men (around here at least) refer to them as a "Tramp Stamp."

Posted by: jpierce55

I seen a handful of women with small ankle/arm tattoo's while I was there.

Posted by: AkMike

Tramp Stamp sums it up for me. They're a turn off.
I did slap a chunk of duct tape on one once. Fact!

In my neck of the wods we call them "hood ornaments"

just about sums it up for me, i really dislike them especially on women,

I don't like tatoos full stop!! especially on women, in fact I used to hate them, but they are now second on my list to piercings, god they are offputingand ugly!! I mean what the hell is going on here??

Posted by: AkMike

Then why do you have so many pics of them Chrismc??
Those are FUGLY!!!!!

Posted by: jpierce55

I don't care for the tattoo's. I can handle one or two small ones but do find many a warning sign. Seems piercings/tattoo's are a form of validation imho and that indicates some lack of self esteem or other issues. (when in mass quantities)

In West Coast slang a "Hood Ornament" is a specific body peircing that is
done to the clitorial hood...

Dated a girl, long time ago, that had one of these.... I believe it reduced her ability to experience gratification due to reduced sensitivity to the region...
nuff said on THAT.

"Tramp Stamp" or "Bumper Sticker" are the terms I have heard used to describe them...

Well if people want tattoos and they think that they are cool or have special meaning to the person , Great.

I have to say that most women( single woman) I meet here in Cali just have to many for my taste.
People always ask me why I went to Russia for a woman.
One major reason was the no tattoos on most of the women over there.
There are a few good looking women here around me and I see the tattoo over the breast or on the shoulder. What a turn off. What makes these so cool?
Then I see the guys there with: Tattooed all over, piercings, etc. Not my style is all I guess.

A tattoo on a woman and the location of the tattoo tells me a lot about the womans personality IMHO.

Quote:

100% agree with this statement.

To each his own though. If you like them there are plenty of woman that have them , this is for sure.

I think the view of tattoos is a generational thing. If AM under 30 were posting here, I think they'd say tattoos are no big deal. When I was growing up, a woman with a tattoo was considered a tramp, and a man dangerous - likely had been in jail or on his way.

In the FSU, almost every man who served in the navy has a tattoo (my husband was in the Northern Fleet, where he acquired his tattoo). It was sort of a rite of initiation - every sailor needs to have a tattoo. It was even considered "prestigious" in villages when boys returned from service.

Just imagine , in about 30 years how many Grannies will be around with a stylish tattoos!

Posted by: Pin Boy

if you think wrinkled but CLEAN skin is repulsive, and if you think tattoos are unsightly NOW, wait til you see all those wrinkled and dirty looking tattoos when people are in their 60's. YUCKO!!!

human skin does not make for a good canvas!

Nonsense, having a tattoo and it's location tells you nothing about someone's personality. Or are you claiming you can tell just on women?

It's an absolutely ridiculous comment to make. Liking or not liking tattoos is personal. Claiming it tells you about their personality is simply an absurdity.

Ade

Posted by: ira156

Any Kiwi can tell you the reason for tattooing ( origionally) was polonesian way of showing your social staus or the highlights of your life...battles fought, marriage children, even your job in th tribe. Unfortunately Russia is picking up the cr@p that we have. Tattoos on the lower back of a woman well i say its like a bullseye or a n arrow saying enter here,,,,,, but hey sign of the times guys....we must be getting old....ha ha

Well for starters this is like over a month old. You just reading this or what?

All I know is all I see is women with tattoos above the breast, on the breast or in the middle of their breast. Everywhere I see these women. I hate having to see this everywhere i go. always wearing low cut shirts to show off the tatoos. Well maybe druggers think its cool or other people. I dont.

Ya i think this tells me a lot of their character. To me they are troubled women and look for attention. If your cool with this great. I am not. It does not look good IMHO. We still have our own opinions last time I checked.

Ade, you telling me that a girl with tattoos over her breast and possibly neck or shoulder and back doesn`t tell you much about the woman?
How about insecurity issues, attention issues, etc.
If your into it great, im not. Come to america, you`ll find tons of these women with tattoos if thats your pleasure.
Jerry

Posted by: Spakoyna

I agree tattoos can say alot about someones personality. My opinion of women with tattoos on their breasts tells me she is advertising that she is experienced if ya catch my drift! If ya find one where the sun don't shine ya better put on the brakes else ya might go home with a permanent itch or worse!

Posted by: j_c

Hi Guys

I have only just picked up on this thread myself , and have to say I find tatoos repulsive, and agree with some of what Jerico says. However I know some people with them that do not fit into the stereotyped "insecure, attention issues etc..." category and in fact are quite the reverse.

I have to say that I believe this is just a personal preference, if you like, great, if you don't , well we all have our own opinions!

JC

Posted by: JamesB

I agree completly.I had tatoos because i wanted them and its a totally personal choice.

Posted by: Ade

Hi Jerico,

Yes, I am just reading this I left the forum for a while, as I needed all my spare time for other stuff.

And I still maintain it's an absurdity to say you can judge someone's character and/or personality by their tattoos.

Lots of people just plain out like them. I do, though I have none. And way back, they were commonplace amongst the various peoples of the British isles, where I come from. Of course, that was then, this is now....but they can be for all sorts of reasons - including just pleasure.

Most of the people I know with tattoos are very secure in themselves and absolutely not needing anyone's attention.

Not liking tattoos is fine - claiming problems for those with them is very narrow minded.

Ade

Well I think we will have to agree to dissagree on this topic , lol.
No hard feelings towards you though Ade.
I just see todays youth going so crazy with these things and it drives me crazy.
Todays youth: Like herds of cattle going off the cliff if you get my meaning.

Jerico

Not trying to be disrespectful here , but I think you have answered your own arguement, it's what is acceptable to "todays youth". Maybe beause you are a little older it does not make sense to you, but does no mean the are all "insecure"?

the art of tattooing goes back for many years some people cant live without it and others cant stand it.so I guess its all in what you like some guys like heavy set women too? and if you get one with tattoos-you can get warmth in the winter and shad in the summerand with tattoos you get moving pictures all year long.just a point of view from some one who has tattoos!

Posted by: Jerico

Ya it may be the sign of the times for Tattoos.

Maybe its a sign for me to change careers and become a tattoo removal technician.
In ten years when todays youth doesn`t like them anymore , a guy could make a fortune removing these things.
