Well, I am trying to keep everything in one thread but it is not very successfull, it's okay but I have to ask about this.

Okay, I have food allergies to Oregano, Thyme, Rosemary, Dill, Tarragon but Basil is fine. Any of this common in Russian cuisine?

Also, I do not like Herring and alot of fishes, is that the main form? Is there such a thing as chicken or Pork of some sort there?

Thanks

Stick with the ham. Didn't like chicken or beef, too tough! My experience was they use alot spices.

Dill is very common. Other spices are used alot such as parsley, cilantro (depending on region), basil is used.

Herring is extremely extremely common! As are fish dishes in general. Even things that dont look like they have fish in them, do. (seledka po shuboy) is a salad that has herring in it but you would not know from looking.
Layered salads (such as layer of boiled egg, mayo, layer of fish, mayo, layer of cheese, mayo, layer of beets, mayo)are salads, not lettuce ones, like you will expect. Mayo, mayo and more mayo and sour cream is in everything almost!

Not sure what you meant by "is there such a thing as chicken or pork of some sort" . Chicken is a bird, pork is a pig, so what do you mean? Do chickens and pork products get used in Russian cooking? yes, most definitely.

Processed meats, such as a million types of sausage also are predominant.

Dill is in alot of the cooking, you can get all the different meats over there no problem Pork, Beef, Chicken and heaps of processed meats you will find most of what you can buy back home in supermarkets you can get over there.

Gonlaz,
Just let your missus know what you are allergic to and she’ll look after you. As Mark stated, you can get most types of food over there. Had no problems purchasing almost end sort of food I wanted when going to a supermarket.

Just a heads up with processed foods over there. When the missus arrived in Australia and saw me buy some sausages she asked me how much sawdust was in them. Left me scratching my head big time until she explained in Russia they mix meat and sawdust together to make sausages. Try avoid the processed foods if you can. You just don’t know what sort of special ingredients they may shove into their processed stuff.

I suppose it all depends on the quality of the sawdust :) you know, from hardwoods or softwoods :jawdrop: big difference to a sawdust connoisseur

What? What the heck do they do that for?

It appears what meat is good and what spices are used depends on what part of Russia you are visiting. Since you will be in Moscow, I'm sure most meat will be good, or you can at least find some good meat. Spices are probably rather abundent. Like someone said, tell your girl what you are allergic to. Point to it in a dictionary and shake your head nyet if you have to!!! :)

I'm allergic to a spice in Russia but I don't know what it is. I was sick both times I went. Take medication in case you are get "plugged up" or "not plugged enough"!!! Don't drink the water, only bottled.
